Former Nevada basketball player David Wood staged what is being dubbed "a one-man pro-Trump protest" during Wednesday's inauguration of Joe Biden as the 46th U.S. president.
Wood was in Washington and is featured in a story by Yahoo News. Draped in an sweater of Jesus hugging the American flag with a video camera attached to his beanie while carrying a Jewish shofar horn, Wood talked to reporters a couple of blocks away from the White House. He was protesting Biden's presidency, with Yahoo reporting Wood was the only "clearly visible protester in sight" from a cleared out downtown Washington.
"This is God's country," Wood told Yahoo News. "You can't steal God's country through voter fraud. I'll just tell you that right now."
After an attack on the U.S. Capitol by pro-Trump supporters earlier this month, law enforcement prepared for potential mass violence during the inauguration, although none unfolded. Wood was one of the few who protested near Capitol Hill.
"I'm a follower of Jesus Christ," Wood told Yahoo News. "I love God, I worship God with my horn and I'm a former NBA player, too."
Wood played for Nevada for two seasons from 1985-87 before playing in the NBA for seven season with eight teams. The 56-year-old, who is originally from Spokane, Wash., said he attended the rally on Jan. 6 that turned ugly when Trump supporters broke into the Capitol, inciting rioting and looting. Five people died during the insurrection, including a police officer who was struck in the head by a fire extinguisher and a rioter who was shot and later died. A reported 60 Capitol police officers were injured during the riot.
“I couldn’t believe the spin on that," Wood told Yahoo News. "The Trump rally was amazingly peaceful. They started it out in prayer to God. It was like a country music concern. Everybody was getting along. Before he even finished his speech, there was a riot at the Capitol and everybody is going to blame it on Donald Trump. He said, 'March to the Capitol. Do not be violent. We'll never give up. We'll never quit.' That’s not inciting a riot. That's not exciting to write. It’s so ridiculous. The spin in the media is really, really bad.”
Wood said be believed Trump, who did not attend the inauguration, would remain the president for another four years, noting Trump did not say Biden's name in a recorded farewell address Tuesday.
“I’ll tell you what’s going to happen," Wood told Yahoo News. "Donald Trump is going to serve four more years. Joe Biden could be inaugurated. He could be arrested right after he’s inaugurated, but it’s safe to say he’s going to resign soon.”
Asked why Biden would be arrested, Wood said: "Voter fraud. He said it himself. He said, 'We're in charge of the biggest voter fraud situation in the history of the world." That claim stems from a popular social media post in which Biden was referring to his team's voter protection program.
Much of Capitol Hill was turned into a "green zone" Wednesday and was patrolled by the National Guard, whose members were vetted for any potential right-wing conspiracy theorizing such as QAnon, a disproven far-right conspiracy that alleges a cabal of Satan-worshipping cannibalistic pedophiles run a global child sex-trafficking ring plotted against Trump. U.S. prosecutors have called the group a cult. Wood said he was not a part of QAnon, but he falsely claimed many of its predictions have been proven correct.
“Q has predicted some things," Wood told Yahoo News. "I don’t follow Q, I don’t even know where you seek Q. But I know people quote Q a lot, and they predicted a lot of things."
Wood, who has worked in Reno as a realtor since retiring from a successful basketball career, which included stints overseas, said he was worried about having his rights taken away.
"There’s a group of organized people that want to take away our rights, want Communism to reign, want to promote one group of people over other groups of people," Wood said.
Playing in the NBA from 1988-1997, Wood averaged 3.9 points and 2.4 rebounds in 412 games for Golden State, Houston, Detroit, San Antonio, Milwaukee, Dallas, Phoenix and Chicago.
Earlier this month, he went on a prayer walk around the White House the posted the video on his YouTube page.
