Residents stepped in to contribute to their community by making masks when a business was closed, providing meals to the healthcare workers at HUMC in the spring, at Easter, and the summer, making ear savers to use with masks, thanking the local first responders, fed those helping at testing sites, and providing PPE for law enforcement officers in the area. Parents organized birthday caravan parades for youngsters unable to celebrate with friends.

Familiarly began to return to the communities. When the annual Hasbrouck Heights Easter Egg Hunt was canceled, the borough brought the Easter Bunny to the kids, with the help of the Hasbrouck Heights Fire Department.  Hasbrouck Heights and Wood-Ridge High Schools held in-person graduations outdoors on their football fields. The Hasbrouck Heights Swim Club re-opened for the summer, with some changes. The Hasbrouck Heights Library and Wood-Ridge Memorial Library re-opened their doors and welcomed back the community.

While spring sports had been canceled, both Hasbrouck Heights and Wood-Ridge softball and baseball teams participated in specially-organized summer events, The Last Dance baseball tournament and One Last Swing softball game.

The summer saw public events on the streets of Hasbrouck Heights. June brought a Black Lives Matter march to the borough, organized by local students. The Boulevard also hosted two Outdoor Dining events, a cooperative effort between the Hasbrouck Heights Regional Chamber of Commerce and borough officials to support local restaurants hit hard by the pandemic.

A return to school saw the gradual return of high school sports. Football resumed in early October. And Wood-Ridge saw the opening of its Wood-Ridge Athletic Complex, which saw Wood-Ridge girls host Hasbrouck Heights for its inaugural game.

The annual Torch Run for Special Olympics, normally held in the late spring, was moved to early October, and without the usual accompaniment of school children.

Early August brought Tropical Storm Isaias to the area, which saw the Wood-Ridge and Hasbrouck Heights Police and Fire Departments answer scores of emergency calls.

Hasbrouck Heights and Wood-Ridge continued the annual tradition of remembering those lost on 9/11.
