Traditional, lifestyle, and manufacturer branded furniture stores each gain market share in 2019 - Furniture Today

There were a few shakeups this year among the 12 major furniture and bedding distribution channels tracked by Furniture Today.

On the strength of strong 2019 performances, traditional, lifestyle and manufacturer-branded furniture stores each gained one percentage point in market share. All other channels, including the DTC channel, held steady from 2018.

Furniture Today’s Top 100 furniture stores, a ranking of the leading 100 furniture stores across the United States, comprised 42% of total furniture and bedding sales in 2019. This marks a 2% gain from the 2018. Furniture Today’s Top 100 stores totaled $48 billion, a 2.9% increase from 2018. According to Furniture Today’s Top 100 report, the Top 100 furniture stores accounted for 85% of all furniture store sales in 2019.

The Top 100 includes stores from the three furniture channels: traditional, lifestyle, and manufacturer branded. The traditional store channel is led by Houston-based Mattress Firm, Seffner, Fla.-based Rooms To-Go, and Berkshire Hathaway furniture division stores.

After emerging from Chapter 11 protection in November 2018, Mattress Firm posted $3.1 billion in furniture, bedding, and accessory sales last year. Those sales also reflect the reintroduction of Tempur Sealy product in Q4 of 2019. Rooms To Go posted furniture, bedding, and accessory sales of $2.6 billion in 2019, flat from the prior year.

Ashley Homestore leads the manufacturer branded channel and led all Top 100 stores in furniture and bedding sales in 2019, recording sales of $4.96 billion, a 9.4% growth from the prior year. Ashley Homestore also managed to add a net 64 additional stores in 2019, contributing to sales growth.

Also included in the channel are La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries and Sleep Number. Sleep Number, No. 11 on Furniture Today’s Top 100 this year, recorded $1.69 billion in furniture, bedding, and accessory sales last year, an 11.2% jump. Close behind was La-Z-Boy Furniture Galleries, with $1.3 billion in total sales.

The DTC channel was led by Amazon and Wayfair, which accounted for 56% of all digital furniture and bedding sales last year, according to Furniture Today estimates. The two digital giants combined for an estimated $7.5 billion in 2019 furniture and bedding sales, a colossal 27.7% annual growth.

With furniture and bedding sales of $4.34 billion last year, Wayfair ranked was the second largest furniture retailer behind Ashley HomeStore. Although Amazon continues to gain ground, the digital giant still fell behind Wayfair in 2019 furniture and bedding sales, at $3.16 billion.
