After getting two starters back in the lineup after their delayed arrivals to training camp, the Rockets hope to have another starter back in the mix in Thursday’s preseason finale against the Spurs.
Center Christian Wood, who had missed the first three games of the preseason with a sore left elbow, will be listed as questionable to play against the Spurs, Rockets coach Stephen Silas said.
“I’m looking forward to at some point getting to see the whole group on the floor together to see what it looks like,” Silas said.
DeMarcus Cousins started the first three games of the preseason, but he and Wood bring different attributes and styles on both ends of the floor, making it a priority to get some playing time with Wood in the preseason finale.
“(Cousins) is obviously a bigger, stronger screener so he can gain a little bit more separation than we can with Christian. But Chris is so dynamic as far as his quickness, rolling to the rim and you can throw lobs to him as he’s rolling. They can both pop back and shoot the ball, so they’re similar. But the way that kind of are effective int heir roll game as well as creating separation for the ball handler, they’re different.”
Defensively, Silas said Wood also relies more on quickness.
“He can block shots,” Silas said. “Good reactor as far as one action happens and now the next action happens and you can get to it. So, to have that quickness on the floor at the five position allows us to do a bunch of different things, whether it’s being up in pick-and-rolls and blitzing a little more or being back and us to funnel guys to him as a shot blocker. And maybe you can get into some switching.”
