MINERAL WELLS, W.Va. — Hino Motors has announced a formal pause in production of its trucks until next fall–impacting the company’s large manufacturing plant in Mineral Wells.
Hino’s board of directors voted Wednesday to halt production until the end of September 2021 at the Wood County operation and a plant the company owns in Canada.
There are approximately 500 employees at the Wood County plant just off the Mineral Wells exit of Interstate 77.
According to a news release, the decision to pause production was made “following challenges in the required U.S. engine certification testing process for new model years of the A09C, J08E, and J05E* engines for North America.”
There was no further explanation.
Hino said because of the shutdown new model year vehicle sales in both countries have been postponed.
“Vehicle production resumption and sales of vehicles containing new model year engines are expected in October 2021 in both the United States and Canada,” the news release said.
The company added it’s currently investigating the impact of the production pause on its earnings.
Hino announced plans back in October to begin producing an electric-powered utility truck. The decision about where to build the new trucks was not announced initially.
The Mineral Wells plant has not been producing at full capacity for most of this year because of the pandemic. Production was curtailed shortly after the pandemic began in March. The production line operated for a brief period in June before a scheduled start-up in November.
