Even Garth Brooks isn’t immune to the magic of the holiday season. During the Garth & Trisha Live! A Holiday Concert special on Sunday night, the beloved country singer had to restart his performance of “Belleau Wood” after getting choked up mid-song. “Almost made it,” he said afterwards, his voice full of emotion. “So sorry.”
Last night, husband-wife duo Garth Brooks and Trisha Yearwood took live requests from fans as part of their CBS holiday special, and no song was more requested than “Belleau Wood,” Brooks’ 1990s single about Christmastime on the front lines of World War I. “This was a request we’ve gotten so many of, even leading up to today,” said a producer (in an elf costume, of course), before reading off a message from a fan asking the couple to perform “‘Belleau Wood,’ the greatest Christmas song around.”
“Good luck, buddy,” replied Yearwood. “Because this one makes me cry, and I never cry.”
As it turns out, Brooks would need more than luck to get through the song in one piece. “We always do an abbreviated version of this,” he explained. “I don’t know how long it’s been since I played the whole version, but if it’s not too much for you guys, I’d like to play the whole song.”
The singer made it about halfway through “Belleau Wood” before he paused to collect himself. “Sorry. I’m gonna get this,” he told viewers at home. After a deep breath, the singer was able to regain his composure, only to lose it again as he cried through the final verse.
Brooks apologized and explained that his brother, Mike, “cries at commercials,” and he recently told him that he needs to “get that crying thing under control.” (Karma, man). Added Brooks, “I love the message. It’s so pretty … And when you’re sitting there going, ‘Here’s hoping we both live to see us find a better way.'”
