Burnell Burns Lowder Wood, age 92, of Sumter, passed away on Friday, Dec. 18, 2020, at Prisma Health Tuomey Hospital.
She was born on Feb. 28, 1928, in the New Zion community of Clarendon County, the third child of nine children born to Evelyn Corinna Morris Burns and James Flovia Burns. A 1945 graduate of Edmunds High School, Mrs. Wood was a longtime member of Bethel United Methodist Church in the Oswego community. She was a former employee at the Capitol Department Store, Electrical Wholesalers and Service Merchandise. Grandma B, as she was lovingly called by her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, was adored by her family, whom she loved dearly. A true southern lady and devout Christian, her love for Christ radiated in everything she said and did. She always had a kind word and cheerful smile for everyone. Very dear to her heart was Smile Train, a charity which provides surgery for children with cleft lip and palate deformities. As an avid contributor and supporter of this organization, Mrs. Wood helped to transform the lives of many children.
Left to cherish her memory is her loving family which includes one daughter, Debbie Lowder Ehlers of Sumter; one son, Wiley Skipper "Skip" Lowder Jr. and wife, Patricia, of Senatobia, Mississippi; five grandsons, Zach Ehlers, Trip Lowder, Patrick Davis and wife, Maria, Terrell Davis and Robert Davis; two great-granddaughters, Abbey Grace Davis and Anna-Lauren Davis; one great-grandson, Patrick Truett Davis; three brothers, Gene Burns and wife, Rose Marie, Robert Burns and Charles Burns; two sisters-in-law, Marie Burns and Pat Burns; and numerous nieces and nephews and countless friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, Carswell "Pug" Wood; her parents; and siblings, Evelyn Burns Lybrand, Olene Burns Brown, Margaret Burns Johnson, Alvin Burns and David Burns; two sisters-in-law, Nita Burns and Eva Burns; and three brothers-in-law, Gene Brown, Walter Lybrand and Byrum Johnson.
A graveside service will be held at 11 a.m. today at the Bethel United Methodist Church cemetery with the Rev. Tim Whited officiating.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be sent to Bethel United Methodist Church, 5575 Lodebar Road, Sumter, SC 29153 or Smile Train, P.O. Box 9231, Washington, DC 20090-6231 or a charity of the donor's choice.
