Wood-Ridge, NJ - The Butler Bulldogs defeated the Wood-Ridge Blue Devils on Saturday afternoon by a score of 28-0, at Donna Ricker Memorial Field at Wood-Ridge High School.

The Bulldogs got onto the scoreboard first following a drive that lasted a little over five minutes.  They marched from their own 44-yard line inside the red zone, leading to a 6-yard rushing touchdown from Joseph Conti. The extra point from kicker Jayden Lewis was no good, taking a 6-0 lead.

Butler obtained favorable field position again as punter Owen Scherdel for the Blue Devils dropped the snap leading to a turn over on their own 40-yard line. Quarterback Cris Verrico rushed to the outside for a 15-yard touchdown. Butler made the score 14-0 on a 2-point conversion from Conti on an inside handoff, with 3:53 remaining in the first quarter.

Towards the end of the first half, Wood-Ridge fumbled, with Butler recovering. However, Butler failed to capitalize in the red zone, leading to the end of the first half.

On Wood-Ridge’s second drive of the third quarter, Michael Sarlo broke off a 59-yard run to the outside inside the 15-yard line. The Wood-Ridge offense stalled, resulted in a turnover on downs to go into the fourth quarter.

On Butler’s ensuing possession, Conti broke off a 38-yard run play but was stopped shy of the goal-line at the one-yard line. He would get a second opportunity, taking it in for the score on the very next play. On a 2-point try, Verrico passed to Kyle Perry on a rollout in the back right-corner of the end zone to go up 22-0 with 7:18 remaining in the fourth quarter.

The final score came on a 10-yard running play from Conti, which was set up on a 17-yard run on the previous play. The final score was 28-0 following a failed 2-point conversion attempt on an attempted pass from Verrico with 2:34 remaining in the game.

The clock ran out on Wood-Ridge’s final drive.
