Athlete of the Week winner Mia Wood of Agawam field hockey sat down with MassLive recently for a virtual Q&A to talk about her breakout junior season, pregame rituals, favorite moment from the season and more.
Finishing with 1,664 votes, Wood ended the contest just over 100 votes ahead of second place finisher Kendyll Wing of Northampton field hockey. Also a junior, Wing was the runner up with 1,561 votes and 35.69 percent.
Wood earned the nomination after securing three goals two weeks ago, two of which came in a 3-3 tie versus the Blue Devils while the other was scored for the Brownies in a 1-1 battle versus Northampton.
“It feels great to have all the support from my friends and family, just Agawam all together” Wood said. “It was a shock when I won. I wasn’t expecting it. It was a good feeling.”
As a sophomore last season, Wood spent some time on Agawam’s JV team and dealt with an injury during the second half of the fall.
This year, as a varsity starter, Wood embraced her role as Agawam’s primary goal-scorer, notching 18 goals to go with four assists.
Wood practiced during the summer on a team that competed with seven players on the field before it was official that high school field hockey teams in the state would have to play 7-on-7. Other than due to rigorous physical preparation, Wood feels like her confidence went up between the end of last season and the beginning of this fall due to the support of her team.
“With the support from my coach and teammates I have definitely been able to grow as a player over the year,” said Wood.
