Two drivers for a trucking company in Essex County were injured Friday after getting into a fight that involved a wooden plank and pocketknife, authorities said.
The men, who work for KZY Logistics in Fairfield, got into a dispute earlier in the week while working in Arizona, according to township Police Chief Anthony Manna.
When one of the drivers returned Friday to the company lot on Commerce Road to return his tractor-trailer, the other driver was waiting for him, “armed with a wooden plank,” Manna said in an email.
Security video showed the man with the plank waiting behind a car for the other driver before “striking him with the wood plank,” Manna said.
The beaten driver pulled out a pocketknife and stabbed his attacker once in self-defense, the chief said.
The man with the plank was identified as Bryan Tay, 40, of Paterson. He was taken to Morristown Medical Center and treated for a stab wound to his abdomen, Manna said.
Alptug Akkus, 29, of Paterson, later turned up at Mountainside Hospital in Glen Ridge with injuries he sustained from being beaten with the wooden plank, Manna said. Both men are expected to survive, according to the chief.
Tay was arrested at the hospital and charged with aggravated assault with a deadly weapon and two weapons offenses, Manna said.
No charges had been filed against Akkus, but the incident remains under investigation by local police and the county prosecutor’s office, Manna said.
