for this project, seoul-based designer jinyeong yeon has taken an unassuming material and turned it into a series of unique objects. by repurposing textured aluminum sheets that are typically found on industrial floor surfaces, the ‘ignored patterns’ collection aims to find beauty in something previously overlooked.

the series comprises a chair, a round chair, and a stool. to bring new life to the aluminum material, jinyeong yeon has curved the sheets and applied graduated color to both the round chair and stool, resulting in a very contemporary, urban aesthetic.

the project aims to show the beauty of this material, and in particular, the raised pattern that is both practical and attractive. the designer explains, ‘the purpose of the work is to show that things in an inferior situation can be seen as beautiful. aluminum check plate is a material that we are always inadvertently stepping on and often see but not interested in. but the material has it’s own pattern and the pattern is quite practical and attractive. the pattern and material are now furniture objects that stand out. you can sit down, not step on it anymore.’
