MOONACHIE, NJ - Seydou Camara became Wood-Ridge’s all-time leading goal scorer with a second half goal to lift Wood-Ridge to a 2-0 victory over McNair Academic (Jersey City) Saturday afternoon at Pomponio Field in Moonachie. It was the season opener for both teams.
Dillan Suelto opened the scoring, with Camara assisting in the first half to give the Blue Devils a 1-0 lead.
Camara gave the Blue Devils some insurance in the second half, as he knocked one off the goal post into the corner of the net for a 2-0 lead. That goal gave Camara the Wood-Ridge record for goals scored in a career, passing Thomas Fishkelta (23.)
Wood-Ridge head coach Alberico DePierro was pleased with the win, but knows his team has to get better to reach its pre-season goals.
"Today's game was much harder than it needed to be," DePierro stated. "Inexperience definitely showed itself today as of the 16 players that played today, five were making their first varsity start, and seven of them were making their first varsity appearance. The players found a way to win despite the performance which is definitely a positive, but they know very well that starting Monday we need to be immensely better. Tonight we take the win and move on to Weehawken."
"One of the bright spots today was that Seydou's second half goal has now made him the program's all-time leading scorer with 23," DePierro stated. "Given that we are such a young program still, that does not come across as a high number but it's a major accomplishment with two full seasons left, and he surpassed one of the founding players of this program and one of the best to ever play for us, Thomas Fischkelta, a player that will never be forgotten. Knowing Seydou, I am sure he is hungry for many more."
Goalkeeper Kyle Ramos recorded six saves for the Blue Devils to pick up the win.
