Herriman City Manager Brett Wood fired - Deseret News

HERRIMAN — The city of Herriman has fired longtime City Manager Brett Wood.

The announcement came in a Friday evening news release saying the Herriman City Council had voted to terminate Wood in a special closed meeting on Wednesday.

Assistant city manager Tami Moody said Friday night that she wasn’t privy to the exact reason for Wood’s firing, but that the termination was not due to misconduct or criminal activity.

The dismissal appears to stem from contention regarding new developments in the city.

The city council took part in several meetings Wednesday, one of which transitioned into a closed session discussing the professional competency of an individual or individuals “regarding accountability for the way SLR and Mountain Ridge was or has been handled ... as well as other recent issues which now include directly failing to carry out direction from council,” Councilman Jared Henderson said in a recording of the meeting.

Real property discussions about the developments, including an automall, Mountain Ridge and Creek Ridge, have been “hot” items throughout the city, Moody said.

There was some confusion among council members about the exact reasons as to why the closed session was necessary.

“Anytime we notice for individual competence of an individual, everybody is on edge, because they don’t know what is going to come out of it,” Councilman Clint Smith said during the meeting. “And that’s my objection to the original motion — is because I don’t know what (the reason) is either.”

“With that being said, I’ve got our city manager here who I respect. ... If his desire is to go and to get this in there, then I will be supportive because of his request.”

The motion to enter a closed session eventually passed, with the four council members each voting yes and Herriman Mayor David Watts voting no.

Reached by phone Friday night, Watts declined to comment on Wood’s firing.

“There definitely seemed to be a little bit of contention,” Moody said about the meeting before it entered the closed session. “The discussions became a little louder and more impactful.”

She expects to know more about the situation sometime early next week.

In the meantime, assistant city manager Wendy Thomas has been appointed interim city manager.

Wood moved to Herriman in 1992 and has been an active part of the community ever since, according to a bio on the city website that has since been taken down.

He had held the city manager position for over 10 years and was previously an assistant city manager, as well as a Herriman city councilman from 1999 to 2003, serving on the city’s first council after incorporation, according to the bio.
