NORTH ROYALTON, Ohio

Drunken driving, Ridge Road: On Aug. 22, police were dispatched to a Ridge Road construction site regarding a man wearing a white t-shirt and blue shorts stealing scrap wood.

The caller said the man, who didn’t appear to be a construction worker, left in an old red Chevy truck. An arriving officer located the speeding truck.

The driver, who wasn’t wearing a seatbelt, told the officer he’s a carpenter who works for the builder. The man said his boss knew he was there taking wood. He offered to call the boss, but the problem was he didn’t have his phone.

That’s when the officer smelled booze on the driver, who slurred his words and said he was working on his sister’s North Royalton condo. The man even mentioned he hates when people steal wood from work sites.

The driver admitted to have a few beers earlier in the day. After failing a field sobriety test, during which he swayed, the man was arrested for drunken driving. During a search of the truck, police discovered it didn’t have a key.

The man told the officer it didn’t need one to start. As for stealing lumber, the officer called two people who were involved in the construction project.

The officer said the conversations confirmed the suspect wasn’t supposed to be there, but they weren’t going to press charges. The driver was also cited for not wearing a seatbelt and speeding.

The officer noted the driver had three previous drunken driving convictions.

Telecommunications harassment, Royalton Road: On Aug. 24, a resident came to the police station to report her ex-boyfriend had been harassing her.

The officer noted he had been at the woman’s house regarding the same complaint a few days prior. At that point, the officer talked to the boyfriend, who not only said he wasn’t afraid of the police but also made threats.

Even though he was told to stop all communication with the woman, the man didn’t stop harassing his ex-girlfriend, who showed the officer various emails from her ex. The woman also said the man’s daughter contacted her and called her nasty names.

The officer then left a message on the man’s voicemail saying he was charged with telecommunication harassment.
