The Dodgers placed third baseman Justin Turner on the injured list with a left hamstring strain and activated infielder Edwin Ríos and pitcher Alex Wood from the 10-day injured list.
An extra spot on the active roster was created when the Dodgers traded Ross Stripling to Toronto on Monday, allowing the Dodgers to activate both Wood and Ríos. Turner was injured on a stolen base during Friday’s game in Texas, but the Dodgers waited until Tuesday afternoon to place him on the injured list to see how the hamstring responded.
Heading into Tuesday night’s series opener against Arizona, manager Dave Roberts said the likelihood of Turner playing was “probably zero.” The Dodgers put him on the IL shortly after.
Roberts said Ríos was “ready and eager” to return from his own left hamstring strain, and he’ll be playing third base Tuesday. Ríos missed 13 games with the injury and was batting .276 with three home runs prior to being sidelined.
Wood will be seeing the bigger change upon his return, as he moves from the rotation to the bullpen.
The left-hander entered the season as a starting pitcher but made just one start July 25, allowing three runs in three innings, before going to the IL with left shoulder inflammation. Wood said his arm slot dropped six inches in that start from where it was at the end of Summer Camp, which was a red flag that the shoulder issue he was dealing with was affecting his performance.
“I do know he feels healthy now, but I don’t know if he decided to raise his arm slot back up,” Roberts said. “The reports that I got, the velocity is right around 90–92, sitting on 91. As long as he’s there executing pitches, spinning the baseball with his change, then he’s going to get Major League hitters out.”
Wood’s move to the bullpen was dictated both by the fact that he’ll need time to build up his arm and that the Dodgers have a full rotation after sticking with Tony Gonsolin as a starter. Roberts said Wood’s role in relief is to be determined, but he should be able to provide one to three innings per outing.
“You look at his arm and not feeling great and you’re looking at how much time we do have to build up to six and 90, that number would be hard to get to,” Roberts said. “In talking to Alex, just understanding the roster and his upside to potentially help us on the active roster was going to be in the bullpen, and he totally got it and was all on board.”
The Dodgers will move forward with Clayton Kershaw, Walker Buehler, Julio Urías, Dustin May and Gonsolin as their five starters. Buehler is expected to return from his blister issue to start Wednesday, pushing Kershaw back to Thursday.
