According to Evan Rachel Wood, it’s a given that HBO’s Westworld will reinvent itself with each new season. But where is it going next?
HBO’s Westworld has come a long way since its first season, which saw the robotics “hosts” at the Western theme park come to the realization that they were being used and abused for human entertainment. With each passing season, it seems like we’ve gotten further from that premise, with the most recent season taking viewers outside of the park and into the human world.
According to Evan Rachel Wood, who plays lead host Dolores Abernathy, it’s basically a given that the series will reinvent itself again with season 4. “Even though the seasons change it’s still just as chaotic behind the scenes, and so there’s something comforting about that because it doesn’t change,” she told Collider. “But every season is a reinvention and [showrunner] Jonah Nolan made it very clear from the beginning that [we would] tear down the sets after every season and start again. It’s bittersweet because you get to know these characters really well and you like them how they are and you have to kind of start over every season, and I think that’s what keeps it interesting. What’s Season 4 gonna be? Even I don’t know!”
And for Wood, reinvention won’t be as simple as a new set or storyline. Her character was seemingly wiped for good in the season 3 finale; insofar as you can kill a creature Dolores, she was killed. If the actress does return, she’ll likely be sporting an all-new persona, which is very possible on a show all about lifelike robots; the woman we know as Dolores may be gone, but it’s very possible someone could make another version of her.
Fortunately, even with the pressure of reinventing characters, settings, and storylines, the cast and crew remain supportive of one another. “It’s felt like that every season a bit,” Wood said. “Season 3 for sure because that was just shooting a completely different show, but luckily it’s still the same people every year, the same crew that’s been with us since the beginning. We’ve been doing it for so long; it very much is like a family.”
With such a committed cast and crew, there’s little doubt fans will be engaged wherever Westworld takes us in the future. Just please let Wood return in some capacity!
