Wood County Commission President Blair Couch says the Wood County Courthouse and the Judge Black Annex will reopen Thursday after the West Virginia National Guard performed a deep clean throughout Wednesday.
County officials closed the courthouse and the annex Tuesday night after an employee tested positive for COVID-19.
However, Couch says there will be no major changes to how the courthouse operates, as county officials were already taking many precautions.
“All elected officials have to base their decisions on what we know from high authority. So CDC, the Mid-Ohio Valley Health Department, the State of West Virginia, they disseminate information down to us, we take that as critically correct, and operate based on that,” said Couch.
A person is required to wear a mask in the courthouse, and Couch says county employees will continue to strictly enforce that.
The courthouse is also cleaned every night to give employees “a fresh start” each day. Had someone been available to do a higher level cleaning Tuesday night, Couch says the courthouse likely would have opened on Wednesday. But, county officials were unable to get anyone until Wednesday morning, when the W.Va. National Guard arrived.
Couch says it worked out, as it gave employees who wanted to get tested, a chance to do so.
“It gives us a chance to take a pause. We have some other people who are wanting to get tested, to find out their results,” said Couch.

A Wood County employee has test positive for COVID-19. Due to health concerns for both employees and public, the historic Wood County Courthouse and the Judge Black Annex will be closed Wednesday, August 5, 2020 for precautionary deep cleaning.
This does not include the circuit court or the magistrate court buildings.
The plan is to reopen the buildings Thursday, August 6th, 2020.
