WASHINGTON, D.C. – Duncan Wood, director of the Wilson Center’s Mexico Institute, has penned a guest column for The Hill about USMCA.

In the op-ed, Wood notes that there is a celebratory mood surrounding the new trade agreement signed by the United States, Mexico and Canada that went into effect July 1.

“This enthusiasm is not unwarranted. We know that the economic relationship between the USMCA partners is worth an astonishing $1.2 trillion and supports 14 million jobs,” Wood states.

However, Wood says this may be the “calm before the storm” and predicts dark clouds on the horizon for Mexico. He notes that U.S. Trade Representative Robert Lighthizer has said the Trump administration is willing take action “early and often” to challenge violations of the new agreement.
