stefan schweighofer has wrapped this austrian three-story holiday house in black wood. located on a steep southern slope above egg that overlooks the bregenz forest, the residence’s shape proportions and orientation are developed with reference to the surrounding buildings. the project sits on the strip foundations of an old building from the 80’s, and can only be reached via the 70 steps of an access staircase.

located in kaltenbrunnen, in the western austrian state of vorarlberg, the holiday home by stefan schweighofer comprises a solid wood construction that allows it to blend harmoniously into the ensemble of existing buildings. the black dwelling is topped with a gable roof that adapts to the slope and the surrounding landscape. the new home sits on the strip foundations of an 80’s building, while it has been moved 1.5 meters from the original position to create a forecourt with a fountain made of bush hammered concrete.
the exterior of the residence is complete with window openings in different sizes that form selected visual axes of the surroundings from the interior. inside, the stepped building comprises three levels that adapt to the steep terrain, creating a three-dimensional spatial experience. the basement encloses the retreat areas with deliberately small-sized bedrooms, which invite visitors to switch off and relax.
the ground floor features a spacious living area, divided into several levels that open up towards the outdoor terrace and the valley in front. the generous sliding door of the ground floor can be completely opened, bringing the adjacent forest into the middle of the living room. a black fireplace in the center of that area warms up almost the entire building while adding to the distinct character of the project.
