Seven Hills Fire Department receives $3,000 donation of brand-new furniture and appliances - cleveland.com

SEVEN HILLS, Ohio -- When not on ambulance runs or dealing with fires, firefighters/paramedics can often be found passing time in the firehouse, which provides the temporary comforts of home. This includes a kitchen for cooking meals and even beds for quick naps between calls.

It’s this reason why Seven Hills Fire Chief Jamie Meklemburg quickly accepted a generous offer from a new local furniture business.

“Out of the blue, I received a phone call from American Freight asking if we would be interested in $3,000 worth of appliances and furniture,” Meklemburg said.

“The woman explained they were taking over the old Sears outlet store. I said we would absolutely be interested.”

While Meklemburg pointed out American Freight is technically located in Parma along the Seven Hills border, the company felt the Broadview Road station was the closest.

Nearly two weeks ago the fire chief with a couple of his firefighters met at the store to select the donations.

“They ended up picking out five new beds and a new refrigerator,” Meklemburg said. “These are new twin beds -- mattresses, box springs and frames. They’re really an upgrade on our current beds, which are incredibly cheap and probably 15 years old. Also, our fridges here are ancient.”

Regarding the purchase of beds, the fire chief said they were on his 2021 list of items to be replaced. Now he can spend that money on other upgrades.

“Even during a pandemic, the Seven Hills Fire Department has continued to serve our community without hesitation,” American Freight Regional Manager Mark Randles said. “These beds, box springs and a refrigerator are just one small way that we can say thank you to our local heroes.

“For many first responders, their workplace acts as a second home. Here at American Freight Furniture, Mattress, and Appliances, we want to add comfort to their days and nights -- just like they have for us by continuing to serve on the front lines.”

It’s this type of generosity from American Freight or seniors this spring who sewed elastic onto existing masks for use during COVID-related runs that Meklemburg said defines Seven Hills.

“It’s been overwhelming to see the support we’ve gotten from this community,” Meklemburg said. “I couldn’t ask for a better group of people.”
