ROYAL OAK, MI – A portion of Michigan’s shuttered Art Van Furniture stores are expected to reopen under new ownership and a new name later this summer.
Eighteen locations will reopen as Loves Furniture, CEO Matt Damiani told the Detroit Free Press. The company plans to hire up to 1,000 store associates, many of whom could be former Art Van employees.
Art Van began liquidating its 97 company-owned Michigan stores in early March, and then filed for bankruptcy.
According to the Freep report, Loves Furniture stores will open in the following cities:
- Ann Arbor
- Battle Creek
- Bay City
- Burton
- Canton
- Howell
- Livonia
- Muskegon
- Petoskey
- Port Huron
- Portage
- Royal Oak
- Saginaw
- Shelby Township
- Taylor
- Warren (8 Mile)
- Waterford Township
- Westland
“We’re investing millions in revamping those store locations,” Damiani said. “When customers walk into the store, they are going to know it’s a different experience — that it’s a Loves Furniture store.”
Loves Furniture aims to create a more personalized shopping experience along with a website to book appointments, pre-shop and place orders, the Freep reports.
Damiani grew up in Troy and earned an undergraduate degree from Michigan State University, the report said. He worked at Art Van for about two years as an e-commerce executive.
Loves was founded earlier this year by entrepreneur and investor Jeff Love, and is headquartered in Royal Oak. Love is the CEO of the Texas-based parent company U.S. Assets.
“We look forward to bringing a brand-new furniture and mattress offering to market very soon,” Love said in a news release.
The stores will sell a wide variety of furniture, including mattresses, at price points for every budget, Diamani said.
Loves also purchased 10 Levin and Wolf furniture stores in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Illinois, Virginia, and Maryland for a total of 27 locations. The $6.9 million deal was approved in U.S. Bankruptcy Court in May. Art Van’s flagship Canton location was added later, the Freep reports.
“These 27 locations is only the beginning as we are already looking at opportunities to grow and expand our new brand with a much larger footprint,” Love said previously.
A business consultant interviewed by the Freep said the stores opening amid the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic could end up being advantageous since many people are cooped up at home and may be eager to freshen their home furnishings.
