From the space that used to be occupied by an auto body shop, customers now browse unique and interesting furnishings as well as items for home decor at Full House Furniture.

The mood suggested is one also for those looking for something different to set off their living space just right.

"I call it quirky," said Donna Adams, owner. "This is not a run-of-the-mill furniture store. We look for unique pieces that allow our customers to express themselves in their choice of furnishings."

Adams obtains her merchandise from a variety of sources, in many cases, obtaining one-of-a-kind items.

"Most of what we have in stock probably hasn't been seen in Texarkana," she said. "You might have seen it, or something like it online Most customers have commented that Texarkana needed quirky kinds of offerings."

Adams said she got the idea for the store from her daughter, who was working at a similar place in Waco, Texas, while in school.

"Mom visited me while I was there and she had a chance to have a look at the place," said Brooke Adams. "The idea stuck with her."

Donna Adams worked for Wayne Goodson for 10 years, keeping the books of the auto body shop. After he retired, she ran the idea by him. He suggested she open the store in his former auto body space.

"I wanted to run a business, but not just for running a business," she said. "I wanted a chance to meet people and communicate."

Adams says there has been a great response to Full House Furniture.

"We've only been open a week and the response has been crazy," she said. "We live in a small town and it doesn't occur to you how many people you don't know until you try something like this. It has just been awesome."

They began receiving stock in March and during that time, they got the store ready to go.

"Despite the craziness, we are set," she said. "This is a learn-as-you-go exercise."

St. Frank Debuts a Furniture Collection, Major Design Auctions Take Place, and More News This Week - Architectural Digest

sedar.indah.link

From significant business changes to noteworthy product launches, there’s always something new happening in the world of design. In this weekly roundup, AD PRO has everything you need to know.

Product Launches

St. Frank and Others Make Notable Debuts

For several years, St. Frank has been carefully placing bespoke pieces of furniture throughout their retail spaces. Now, they’re expanding that effort with a full-on collaborative collection. “We’re thrilled to to be introducing our first offering of upholstered furniture in partnership with Forsyth,” St. Frank founder Christina Bryant says to AD PRO. “This collaboration allows us to bring our signature printed textiles to one-of-a-kind furniture pieces as well as bespoke ottomans and poufs.” Beyond such items, fans of midcentury modernism should look out for vintage efforts as well, such as a pair of indigo Eero Saarinen chairs.

The interior designer behind Kelly Martin Interiors has launched a furniture collection by the name of ATELIERxKM. The works, which skew toward dark tones, take inspiration from European design. Also of a continental focus are Dior Maison’s two new tabletop collections. Titled Summer Vibes and Cannage Provence, they respectively focus on tropical pineapple motifs and caning techniques.

On a smaller business note, John Rosselli & Associates is making brick-and-mortar moves. The firm’s Florida location is also shifting, with both new locations expected to open as soon as renovations are completed.

Two Companies Donate Profits and Time, Respectively

If you’re searching for a furniture company that’s trying to make the world a better place, consider Azadeh Shladovsky. Shladovsky’s namesake brand designed its new Fractured series of stools pre-pandemic. Now, the company will be donating 100% of the profits from these works to My Friend’s Place, SUPRMARKT, and St. John’s Well Child & Family Centers throughout the year. A trusted source for a slew of celebrities, Shladovsky’s name is clearly one to know.

Dodgers' Alex Wood: Yet to resume baseball activities - CBSSports.com

sedar.indah.link

Wood is resting his left arm and allowing his shoulder inflammation to subside, thus he has not yet returned to baseball activities, Alanna Rizzo of Spectrum SportsNet LA reports.

Wood was placed on the 10-day injured list Tuesday, and the Dodgers have opted to allow the southpaw time to heal before pushing him to ramp up again. Per Michael J. Duarte of NBC LA, Wood will not pick up a baseball for a week, so a minimum stay on the IL appears to be a longshot. With Wood out of the rotation for the time being, Dustin May figures to continue filling in as a starter.

N-Hance™ Wood Refinishing Sees Spike in Kitchen Renovations During Pandemic - PRNewswire

sedar.indah.link

Seeing firsthand evidence of this trend is N-Hance™ Wood Refinishing, a national franchise specializing in the refinishing of hardwood floors and kitchen cabinets. The brand is reporting heightened demand for kitchen wood refinishing services, as some franchisees are seeing double digit increases in customer leads over last year at this time.

N-Hance notes some of the most popular kitchen color schemes homeowners have been asking for over the last four months:

  • All-White – A classic look that keeps a room clean and fresh. A white room is bright and inviting, but also timeless, which avoids costs for near future updates.
  • Two-Toned Rooms –For example, a kitchen with white cabinetry on the perimeter and a splash of color on the island to create a focal point creates a colorful, yet balanced space.
  • Jewel-Toned Features– Known for adding depth and sophistication to a room, jewel toned cabinets are all the rage. Emerald greens and navy blues paired with clean and classic white, wood or gold tones make for a beautifully balanced room with a splash of color.
  • Black Cabinetry – Black cabinetry is on the rise, highly sought after for making a room instantly look sleek and modern. Paired with soft gold fixtures, the trend makes any room look and feel timeless and chic.
  • Classic Grey – A popular trend among homeowners, grey – similar to white – creates a clean and timeless look that makes the room softer and more inviting.

To help homeowners achieve their home renovation goals, N-Hance uses proprietary solutions and refinishing techniques to restore the natural beauty or change the color completely of hardwood floors, cabinets, doors and trims. The refinishing process provides a much higher quality and durability than painting methods and the brand can help with any wood refinishing need: cabinets, hardwood floors, exterior and interior doors, built-ins, stairs and railings, moldings and trim, furniture, etc.

"Complete room remodels can be costly – for example, a full kitchen remodel may cost upwards of $30,000. At N-Hance, we offer customers a way to change the look of their home with a smaller, more affordable refinishing option that makes a significant difference in the look of a room," said Nellie Garibyan, a franchise owner in Boise, Idaho. "Throughout the pandemic we have seen a strong response from our customers and that demand continues to grow. We look forward to helping homeowners achieve the home of their dreams with our safe, high-quality refinishing services."

To ensure the safest experience possible, N-Hance offers a virtual estimate service that allows for a detailed and accurate estimate while keeping the safety and privacy of customers top of mind. In addition, N-Hance technicians are following strict safety guidelines and best practices with guidance from the CDC that include wearing medical gloves, shoe covers and facial coverings (when appropriate), observing safe social distancing and more. N-Hance sets the industry standard for hardwood refinishing. Helping lead the company's growth is its one of a kind "Lightspeed® instant curing system" for hardwood cabinets and floors which saves customers time and money over the traditional refinishing, refacing or replacing alternatives. N-Hance's services can give new life to your cabinets, renewing their natural beauty or updating them with a more modern look.

Wood County adds to list of possible locations of COVID-19 exposure - Wisconsin Rapids Tribune

sedar.indah.link

Wood County health officers are adding locations and dates to a list of places in Wood County where people who were infected with COVID-19 visited and could have spread the disease.

On Thursday evening, health officials said a person who tested positive for COVID-19 had visited 4 Stools bar in Wisconsin Rapids from 3 p.m. to 2 a.m. July 21. Another person who tested positive for COVID-19 had visited Whisky Rapids bar in Wisconsin Rapids between 11:30 p.m. and 1:30 a.m. July 25 and 26.

Health officials said Wood County is seeing community spread of the coronavirus and, as of Thursday evening, had just seen its largest increase of positive cases. There are 57 active cases in the county and 210 total positive cases have been identified.

Health officials in Wood County are encouraging people to use face coverings in compliance with Gov. Tony Evers' mandate for people in the state to wear masks when indoors, excluding private residences.

“We are in a battle against this virus, not each other,” Wood County Health Department staff wrote in a news release. “It is on all of us to ensure these efforts are successful.”

The department recommends people also continue physical distancing and washing their hands often.

“We don’t think twice about lending a hand to a neighbor in need,” said Sue Kunferman, the director of the Wood County Health Department. “Wearing a mask and practicing physical distancing is just another way we take care of each other and take responsibility for the health of our community. It is an acknowledgement that we’re at our best when everyone chips in to do their part.”

The two locations where people may have been exposed to COVID-19 add to existing locations the county released earlier this week.

On Wednesday, health officials said people may have been exposed at:

  • 4 Stools bar in Wisconsin Rapids from 3 to 9 p.m. July 21 and from 8 p.m. July 22 to 2 a.m. July 23
  • Perkins restaurant in Wisconsin Rapids from 4 p.m. to midnight July 20
  • St. John’s Lutheran Church, the cemetery and Riverside Park in Pittsville from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. July 25

Last weekend, health officials said people could have been exposed at:

  • Hollyrocks bar in Wisconsin Rapids from 3 to 9:45 p.m. July 21; from 11 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. July 22; and from 5:30 to 10 p.m. July 23
  • Jennings & Co., a restaurant and bar in Wisconsin Rapids, on July 18
  • Perkins from 4 p.m. to midnight July 21 and 4 to 8 p.m. July 23
  • The Wisconsin Rapids Aquatics Center from 1 to 6:30 p.m. July 21 and 22
  • The Wisconsin Rapids Skate Park from 6:30 to 8 p.m. July 21 and 22

Anyone who was possibly exposed at one of those locations should monitor themselves for symptoms for two weeks, health officials said. Symptoms include fever, cough, shortness of breath, sore throat, headache, fatigue, body and muscle aches, nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, loss of smell and loss of taste. Anyone who develops symptoms should contact a health care provider for testing.

Review: 'The Weekend,' by Charlotte Wood - Minneapolis Star Tribune

sedar.indah.link

In “The Weekend,” Australian author Charlotte Wood’s dark, smart comedy of manners, three women spend a weekend together at a beach house in Bittoes, a fictional spot on the rocky, famously beautiful coastline between Sydney and Newcastle. But as one of them repeatedly reminds the others, this is not a vacation — despite the fact that it’s Christmastime, and they’ve been spending the holiday together here for years. This year, its owner, Sylvie, has recently died, and they’ve been sent by her partner Gail to “take anything they want” and “have a holiday.”

“How you could think clearing out your dead friend’s house a holiday,” thinks Wendy, once a prominent academic, on her way down in her half-dead car with her half-dead dog, whom she knows was not invited. Blind, deaf, disoriented and pacing in circles, poor Finn will dog the events of the weekend with bleak metaphoric resonance.

In any case, what these women want is not there anymore — their generous, warmhearted friend Sylvie, who was the glue in this 40-year-old friendship, formed when the women were in their prime, gathering with their partners at Jude’s trendy restaurant to celebrate Adele’s successes on stage or Wendy’s new book. What they will sadly find is that “Adele and Wendy and Jude did not fit together properly anymore, without Sylvie.”

Like Finn, none of them is what they once were. Jude is bitter, cold and uptight, having spent her entire adult life as the mistress of a married man. Wendy is lonely — too lonely to let Finn go — and desperate to recapture her intellectual fire. Once a celebrity actress, Adele hasn’t had a part in ages. As Wendy further muses on her drive to Bittoes, “Everybody hated old people now; it was acceptable, encouraged even, because of your paid-off mortgage and your free education and your ruination of the planet.”

The psychological landscape of women over 70, even over 50 or 60, has not been a popular subject for contemporary fiction. Recently, Elizabeth Strout offered a strong exception with “Olive, Again,” which followed her cantankerous heroine into her 90s. For a reader in or facing the demographic of Wood’s three friends, “The Weekend” is both fascinating and chilling. Not just the question of superannuated friendships, but also past-prime careers, aging bodies, senior finances and calcifying personality traits are all fairly coldly examined here. “After she gave you something, she would badger you for months about its welfare. How’s the couch?”

At the very beginning of the book, Jude considers what her married lover believes is the real reason most men don’t read fiction. “They would be led to understanding themselves, and it scared the [expletive] out of them.” Fortunately for Charlotte Wood, women readers are braver.

Hate your home office setup? Muji is now offering furniture to rent - Fast Company

Muji’s new furniture subscription program is designed to help customers to work from home in style.

Hate your home office setup? Rent Muji furniture for just $7 a month
[Photo: Muji]

Muji, the brand known for minimalist home goods and furniture, has launched a monthly furniture subscription program that is perfectly suited to life in quarantine.

Around the world, people have been forced to transform their homes into offices. And for those who don’t have a dedicated workspace, this means sprawling out on the dining table or sofa or bedroom. It’s not ideal for productivity, nor is it particularly comfortable. But with Muji’s monthly subscription, which is available in Japan, customers can rent simple pieces, such as oak desk and chair sets, for as little as $7 (800 yen) a month. And when their offices reopen, they can ship all the furniture back.

Muji has also launched two design consultation services to help customers arrange their furniture at home. Customers can buy a Petit Renovation plan, where designers will create two layouts of their home, rearranging the existing furniture to make space for a home office. Alternatively, they can connect with an adviser online who will offer personalized recommendations.
There’s no word yet about whether Muji will bring these services to America. Muji’s U.S division took a hit from the coronavirus pandemic and declared bankruptcy in early July. The company announced that it would reduce its brick-and-mortar footprint in the United States to focus on e-commerce.
Furniture subscription services have existed for decades in the U.S. through companies like Rent-A-Center, but in recent years, a wave of brands has entered the space catering to millennials who move frequently and would prefer to rent rather than own furniture.  Startups such as Feather and Fernish have created their entire business model around renting furniture from hip furniture brands such as Crate & Barrel and West Elm. Meanwhile, Ikea announced that it would be testing a rental model in 30 markets in 2020.
Some health policy experts believe we won’t be able to return to normal office conditions until November 2021 so it makes sense to redesign our homes so we can work more comfortably and productively. Furniture rentals solve that problem. They’re also a savvy business move, creating additional revenue for brands at a time when many consumers are not comfortable shopping in stores; in some cases, renters may even fall in love with the furniture and purchase it outright.

At the same time, consumers are hyper-conscious about germs and may feel squeamish about renting furniture that has lived in someone else’s home. And given the turbulent economy, other consumers may not want to spend any money at all on furniture, even if it is rented.

New plan aims to build wood pellet mills in Northern Minnesota - KBJR 6

sedar.indah.link

DEER RIVER, MN -- The forest industry is struggling in Minnesota's north woods.

According to the DNR, in the last 15 years, more than 150 of the state's lumber mills have closed.

It is due to evolving technologies, new forms of energy and growing competition in other parts of the country.

Most recently, the pandemic led to the shuttering of Verso in Duluth.

However, there is a new proposal aiming to transform, and maybe even revive Minnesota's forest industry. Wood pellet plants.

Matt Rajala is the plant manager of Rajala Timber Company near Grand Rapids.

It is a sawmill that has been in his family for four generations,
churning out lumber for home building and other industries.

But Rajala is concerned the fifth generation will have to find a different line of work.

"Companies this size are getting really rare. They're definitely not starting and we're shrinking," said Rajala.

Those struggles are due in large part to a trend across the country, and right down the road.

"This was directly tied to our paper market here in the Grand Rapids area and a cogen facility," said Rajala. "They've made the decision to go to strictly natural gas."

Fewer companies are burning and utilizing the leftover bits of wood that pile up around lumber mills, resulting in giant mounds all over the timber yards. That material is called residuals, and the market for them is shrinking.

"It leaves us with stockpiles of things with which we don't know what to do," said Rajala.

But there's a new proposal to help the lumber mills unload the residuals and capitalize on growing demand overseas.

An initiative called NorthStar Pellets is backed by several timber companies and at least one economic development group in Northern Minnesota.

It calls for the construction of one or more wood pellet plants in the Grand Rapids and Bemidji areas, close to existing lumber mills.

The pellets would be made of those piles of sawmill residuals.

"The rest of the world has decided wood pellets are part of reducing the carbon footprint," said Marty Goulet, Director of Highland Pellets.

Highland Pellets is the company that would build the plants.

Highland already operates a large pellet facility in Arkansas and wants to do the same here, shipping the final product overseas where demand is growing.

"So foreign governments have provided incentives to move from coal to wood," said Goulet. "Asian coal plants are being incentivized by the government to convert fully, or use some pellets."

"Wood makes sense from a climate change perspective," said Greater Bemidji Forestry Director, Peter Aube. "The wood has already been harvested and transported and processed through a mill, so the carbon has already been spent."

So a lot of wood harvested across Northern Minnesota and Northern Wisconsin, then processed at Potlatch in Bemidji or Rajala in Deer River, would later head to Japan in the form of pellets.

"This is an opportunity to build an industry in Minnesota," said Goulet.

Goulet says the current plan would create 245 direct and indirect jobs, generating $57 million per year for Minnesota.

But the company is also asking for help from the state
in the form of $2.5 million per year for 10 years, and it seems the timing for that is not ideal.

"I support the project completely," said DFL Senator David Tomassoni. "Whether we have the money to do it is the question."

"Now we're looking at a $2.5 billion deficit, so i just see it as a tough push," said DFL Representative Rob Ecklund.

Tomassoni and Ecklund are two of the lawmakers who will decide whether to give NorthStar Pellets the money and green light.

They say the pandemic is eating into the state budget, and the ability to invest in pellets.

"It's a no-brainer of a project if there's no subsidy, but the big subsidy makes it a bit of a problem," said Senator Tomassoni.

Meanwhile back at Rajala, they are trying to figure out what to do with a product they are unable to sell.

"Spending real money that we don't have trying to stockpile, move and store these piles," said Rajala.

The family business -- hoping and waiting for a future with pellets.

"I'd hate to think of the consequences of this not panning out," said Rajala.

There are currently no pellet plants in Minnesota, but many in Wisconsin and Michigan, and more are popping up in western Canada, as the overseas market grows.

As for what comes next for the NorthStar Pellets proposal, the project and money it needs will likely go before the State Legislature during the next session.

It does have some republican support as well.

Project leaders say if they got the green light, a pellet plant in the Grand Rapids or Bemidji area could be built and running within 18 months.

We will keep following the progress.

Pistons Notes: Wood, Kennard, G League, Mincberg - hoopsrumors.com

An agent who spoke to James L. Edwards III of The Athletic speculates that Christian Wood may lose some leverage on the free agent market this offseason as a result of two factors: The impact the coronavirus pandemic will have on the salary cap and the fact that the Pistons have a new general manager in Troy Weaver.

As the agent points out, Weaver has a fresh slate and doesn’t necessarily have an attachment to Wood, so he may be reluctant to commit big money to the breakout big man, since it would hamper his flexibility going forward. And since few teams around the NBA will have cap room available, the Pistons may be able to play hardball to some extent with Wood and avoid making a massive commitment.

“To me, Christian Wood and his reps have a tricky situation because you have that situation with the Pistons’ (new GM), the lack of a rise in cap space and things like that,” the agent told Edwards. “They have to play their hand right, or they could be out there looking for a chair in a game of musical chairs.”

The agent added that he’d feel more comfortable investing long-term in Luke Kennard – who will be extension-eligible this offseason – than in Wood, given the way the wing and big man positions are valued in the modern NBA.

Here’s more on the Pistons:

  • Keith Langlois of Pistons.com takes a closer look at the Pistons’ purchase of the Northern Arizona Suns, detailing how it will allow the team to move its G League affiliate to Detroit and why the organization felt the investment will be a worthwhile one.
  • As Langlois details in a separate article at Pistons.com, Weaver and the Pistons’ front office will face a difficult challenge in this year’s draft: Finding a potential franchise cornerstone in a draft class that appears lacking in surefire stars.
  • Rod Beard of The Detroit News spoke to Bucks general manager Jon Horst about David Mincberg, whom the Pistons recently hired away from Milwaukee as an assistant general manager. “I think that he’s a very creative thinker that has a persistent, tactful way of approaching things,” Horst said of Mincberg. “And that, for me, was incredibly beneficial.”
  • It remains to be seen whether the NBA will actually move forward with a reported plan to create a second “bubble” in Chicago for the league’s bottom eight teams, but Omari Sankofa II of The Detroit Free Press explores whether such an arrangement would benefit the Pistons.

Evan Rachel Wood Does Her Best Elizabeth Holmes Voice in the Kajillionaire Trailer - Vulture

sedar.indah.link

For the past few years, pop culture has been enamored with scammers. Maybe that’s why Evan Rachel Wood has adopted the husky timbre of Silicon Valley blood-scamstress Elizabeth Holmes for her role as oddball Old Dolio in Miranda July’s latest film, Kajillionaire. Either that, or Wood’s voice is stuck that way from playing robots. After premiering at Sundance in the short window of time in 2020 when things were actually still happening, Kajillionaire has a new trailer before its release in theaters on September 18. The trailer introduces us to Old Dolio and her parents, con artists played by Debra Winger and Richard Jenkins, who have raised their adult daughter to pull off small jobs to “just skim” through life. The film picks up on them bringing an outsider played by Gina Rodriguez in on their schemes, “only to have their entire world turned upside down.” If this trailer’s use of Angel Olsen and menacing millennial pink ooze don’t get you, the promise of getting an inside look at the pathology of Amazon package thieves will.

'Kajillionaire': Evan Rachel Wood plays con artist in trailer for new film - UPI News

July 30 (UPI) -- Focus Features is giving a glimpse of the new film Kajillionaire.

The studio released a trailer for the comedy-drama Thursday featuring Evan Rachel Wood as Old Dolio, the daughter of lifelong con artists Robert (Richard Jenkins) and Theresa (Debra Winger).

The preview shows Old Dolio and parents swindle, scam and steal at every opportunity. The family's life is turned upside down after a stranger (Gina Rodriguez) joins their next con.

Kajillionaire is written and directed by Miranda July. The movie is July's first film since The Future, released in 2011.

Kajillionaire had its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival in January and will open in theaters Sept. 18.

Wood said in an interview with Variety in January that she and Rodriguez worked "so well together" as their characters' relationship unfolds.

"She's so good at what she does, and she brings this incredible energy with her that was really easy to fall in love with," Wood said of Rodriguez.

"Our dynamic was always funny, because we play such opposites, but somehow it really works. So there's this amazing connection between the two of us," she added.

Wood plays Dolores on the HBO series Westworld. Rodriguez starred as the title character on The CW series Jane the Virgin, which ended in July 2019 after five seasons.

Since its founding a decade ago, Kammok has made a mission of designing new ways to sleep outside. That approach has always focused on the hammock — its Pongo sleeping pad's unique shape fits inside one, and its Sunda tent is one — even as it broadened its scope to make items like camping quilts and backpacks. The brand has also focused primarily on outdoor adventure, but its latest product, the Baya, brings hammocking back to the backyard in a novel way that looks way more fun than traditional patio furniture.

a piece of furniture consisting of three hammocks, a table, and an umbrella
Kammok’s Baya with optional table and umbrella.

Kammok

The Baya is a hammock stand, but it's unlike any you've seen before. It doesn't hold one hammock; it cradles three. The structure changes what might typically be a nap spot to something social. The Baya further reinforces group use with modular add-ons that include a tabletop and umbrella, plus integration with Yeti's Tank 85 Ice Bucket. (These items and the hammocks themselves — Kammock recommends its Roo Double — are all sold separately.) So while the Baya is similar to the outdoor furniture you already own, it's more like an arts festival installation than your standard table and chairs.

This Teeny Tiny Office Furniture Is a Sight for Sore Eyes - Architectural Digest

sedar.indah.link

Pair originally worked for months to debut Olli, their new modular workplace furniture system, at NeoCon. But when the trade fair was canceled in light of the coronavirus pandemic, Pair’s designers brainstormed ways to make the launch both accessible and fun. The result? Four miniature offices that were created in each of the designers’ own homes, inspired by various workplace styles. That means that the company devised tiny options for theoretical marketing, executive, creative, and information technology teams.

“We were planning to do a mini furniture display at our booth at NeoCon,” senior designer Hillary Kalamaha explains to AD PRO of the inspiration behind the Minis. “We wanted to show sales teams how they could mix and match the furniture.”

The 13 SKU Olli launch is the culmination of several years of work. “The idea behind Olli is that it is dynamic: ever changing and shifting,” says industrial designer Elliot Whalen, who notes that there is no star product in the line because each one—from the power and data beam to the accessories—plays a vital role in creating workstation clusters that can be pulled apart and reassembled.

The entirety of design engineer Sam Petrovich’s vision was wedged inside a home bookshelf. The images, which went live on the company website this week, are being used for promotional purposes.

Each Mini also shows the mind behind the creator. Application designer Alyse Kobus used small pieces of wood to create her Olli Mini, and placed it in her kitchen next to vintage plates and a coffee maker for scale. Whalen was inspired by the idea of the executive office and placed his Mini on the stonework of his house’s front steps. He used a 3D printer to form the core furniture and contrasted black tables with pops of color using nail polishes that mimic a powder coat. “I was already working on a dollhouse for my niece,” he adds with a laugh. Kalamaha gave her tiny furniture softer curves to suit a creative team (her image was photobombed by her cat, but she chose to let it stay to show viewers the scale). Design engineer Sam Petrovich selected a layout for an IT team, contrasted with a vinyl record shelf for size.

Much like Lilliputian worlds created for the enjoyment of children, the four Olli Minis have a storybook element to them, with tricks like mirrors that “double” the space, plants plucked from the designers’ gardens, and details such as mini folders left open on tables. “They show the ability to change out the accessories and allow clients to have a low-cost way of making these changes,” explains Kalamaha, who adds that the demand for furniture—particularly with screens and other safety-enhanced features as a result of the pandemic—has not ebbed. “All these plug-and-play elements that make up Olli are what you see in the Minis.”

Lawsuit delays Frank J. Wood Bridge replacement, drives up cost - Press Herald

sedar.indah.link

The Maine Department of Transportation expects to put its Frank J. Wood Bridge replacement project out to bid in early 2021 and start construction during 2021. Maine Department of Transportation image

TOPSHAM — Maine Department of Transportation says replacing the Frank J. Wood Bridge will take more time and money than expected, due to a lawsuit by opponents of the state’s plan.

The transportation department’s three-year work plan includes $19.8 million to replace the bridge carrying traffic over the Androscoggin River between Brunswick and Topsham. When the plan was released in January, the department planned to seek bids in September and start construction in 2021.

MDOT spokesman Paul Merrill said Tuesday the project won’t be advertised for bids until the first part of 2021. Construction would be expected to start a couple of months later.

Despite the state’s plans, the fate of the 83-year-old truss bridge hinges in part on a lawsuit filed in 2019 against the Maine Department of Transportation and the Federal Highway Administration.

Friends of the Frank J. Wood Bridge, the National Trust for Historic Preservation and the Historic Bridge Foundation allege that both transportation agencies relied on inaccurate information to artificially inflate the projected costs of rehabilitating the existing bridge. The transportation department has denied those claims.

John Graham, a spokesman for the Friends of the Frank J. Wood Bridge, said Wednesday the lawsuit is still pending.

“We feel strongly that we’re going to win this in the court and MDOT will be forced to rehab” the bridge, Graham said.

The town of Topsham plans to spend $360,000 on a public space along the Androscoggin River as part of the state’s Frank J. Wood Bridge replacement project. Maine Department of Transportation image

“We will need to work through the legal proceedings, the remaining construction details of the project, and discussions and coordination with the project abutters,” Merrill said.

The state initially estimated in 2017 that the bridge replacement would cost $15 million. Merrill said there are many factors that have driven up the cost of the project, which was initially slated to start in 2019.

“It is fair to say the challenges to this project have contributed to the extended review process, and as time goes on, costs go up,” Merrill said. “In this case, the costs have gone up more than typical cost increases.”

The project should have all state and federal permits by this summer or fall, Merrill said.

Graham said the Friends of the Frank J. Wood Bridge still feel the new bridge is not the right solution and will cost taxpayers more money.

Local public riverside projects

A joint Brunswick and Topsham design committee finished plans earlier this year for public park-like spaces that the transportation will help build as part of the bridge project.

Topsham residents were expected to vote Wednesday whether to spend $360,000 on the parks project, funded primarily through a tax increment financing agreement. Brunswick’s is estimated at $330,000.

In Brunswick, the project will enhance the existing Anniversary Park, which abuts the bridge and the river, said Sally Costello, Brunswick’s economic and community development director.

Topsham Economic and Community Development Director John Shattuck said the additional public space make the new bridge a “more functional, beautiful bridge and one that people  will enjoy much more.”
