This compact single-family house was built in the 1920s when Brooklyn farmland was giving way to neat rows of houses with modern amenities. Located at 3622 Avenue R in Marine Park, it still has some of its period charm along with a garage and off-street parking.
Newspapers from the mid to late 1920s are filled with ads for homes that were quickly being constructed as open space in the newly developing neighborhood disappeared for residential rows. Many ads describe “English style homes” or “brick period homes” that took design cues from the Tudor Revival and Colonial Revival styles then popular. Typical picturesque details included half-timbering, massive chimneys and peaked gables. The houses also featured that newly important amenity, a garage.
While its neighbor sports half-timbering, No. 3622 has a massive chimney and metal door hood. The original first floor window configuration can be seen in the circa 1940 tax photo.
The first floor has a small foyer, a living room, dining room and kitchen. There’s a wood-burning corner fireplace in the living room, and parquet floors with inlay trim stretch into the dining room.

The galley kitchen has had a recent update with new flooring, slab-fronted white cabinets and a subway tile backsplash.
The staircase off the living room leads the second level, where there’s a stained glass skylight and more original parquet flooring.
There’s only one photo of a bedroom, but you can take a full look at the upstairs on the virtual tour. As expected for a house of this vintage and style, there’s one small bedroom that looks like it would fit a crib or twin bed and two larger bedrooms, all with parquet floors and closets.
The only bathroom in the house is upstairs; it has beige fixtures and floral adorned tiles on the wall. There’s no mention of a washer/dryer, but there is a basement reachable via a stair off the kitchen or from the rear yard.
The garage is located in the rear, and the driveway can accommodate more cars. The backyard has been entirely paved over, although there is a patch of grass in the front.
The house is located just blocks away from the landmarked Hendrick I. Lott House, an 18th century farmhouse where family descendants resided until the 1980s. It’s now operated as a historic site, although temporarily closed during the city shutdown. Also within walking distance is Marine Park and its walking trails, Salt Marsh Nature Center and bird watching along Gerritsen Creek.
The house last sold in 2016 for $535,000. Listed by Emily Hui Chen-Liang of Re/Max Real Estate, it’s asking $669,000. What do you think?
