A load of charred wood burst into flames in the back of a truck near a Speedway gas station in Taos Saturday afternoon (May 23), unbenownst to its driver, who stopped the vehicle dangerously close to a diesel gas pump.
Taos volunteer firefighters responded to the scene near the intersection of Paseo del Pueblo Sur and Paseo del Cañon East around 3 p.m. Saturday and were able to put out the fire, keeping it from spreading to the nearby fuel tanks. The driver was assessed by a medic at the scene and was uninjured in the incident.
Employees at an adjacent Kentucky Fried Chicken leaned on a railing outside the restaurant as the firefighters continued to spray water and cooling foam at the blackened truck, which had been pulled into a safer location under a nearby carwash.
One of the restaurant workers said flames were already towering from the truck bed by the time the driver pulled into the gas station driveway. He said he tried to alert the driver, who didn't appear to realize the load he was carrying was burning behind him, the worker said.
Another bystander said he was driving behind the truck when the wood caught fire. He drove behind the driver, frantically trying to flag him down and alert him.
Officers with Taos Police and the Taos County Sheriff's Office helped to secure the scene as the firefighters worked. Sgt. Ron Montez of Taos Police said the driver told him that he knew the wood was charred when he picked it up on Saturday. The driver said he was told the wood was a year old and so was safe to transport.
