The Match: Champions for Charity -- all set to raise eight figures in money for coronavirus relief efforts -- may not be in danger of not happening as planned on Sunday. Rain is bombarding Hobe Sound, Fla. and Medalist Golf Club, where the exhibition featuring Tiger Woods and Peyton Manning battling Phil Mickelson and Tom Brady is slated to take place.
It would be very 2020 of this event to get washed out and a huge bummer for everyone who was looking forward to watching golf on television today. Here's a look at the forecast for Hobe Sound from 3-7 p.m. ET, when the event is scheduled to happen. There's a 100 percent chance of rain for the first few hours of the match with little reprieve later on in the evening if you wanted to sneak it in before sunset. It's a lousy situation, especially when the event was set to raise $10 million or more for coronavirus relief efforts.
I guess we should know by now to not get our hopes up too high in this year because something -- literally anything at all -- will bring them crashing down.
There's no word yet on whether the exhibition could be moved, but I suspect that's an option. There aren't that many moving parts, and Monday is a holiday anyway. You could theoretically play the entire thing at Medalist Golf Club on Monday as long as all the participants were willing to stick around (Tiger lives there so he should be willing to stick around).
CBS Sports will update this story as it develops in the hours ahead, with one eye still on that 3 p.m. expected start time and the match play event that will hopefully unfold in the hours after that.
