Although Logan Wood was not able to play his senior season of baseball at Orchard Lake St. Mary’s this spring, he is still winning some hardware.
The dominant senior left-handed pitcher was selected at the 2020 Gatorade Michigan Baseball Player of the Year on Thursday, despite the 2020 season not being played in Michigan because of the coronavirus. Putting together a stellar career at St. Mary’s, Wood headed into this spring with a career record of 23-5. Wood has compiled 324 strikeouts in 212.2 innings pitched throughout high school and is the first from his school to be awarded the honor.
Set to play baseball at Michigan next spring, Wood was the ace for the Eaglets last spring as St. Mary’s claimed the Division 2 state championship. Last season, he had an ERA of 1.07 and a 10-0 record, including throwing a two-hitter in the state semifinals. He struck out 138 batters on the season and walked only 31. In his final two high school starts, Wood pitched a combined 14.2 scoreless innings, surrendering four hits and striking out 19.
According to a release from Gatorade, Wood was also a member of the 2019 Perfect Game WWBA and Perfect Game Elite national championship squads, where he surrendering just four hits while striking out 19 batters in 16 innings of work. He posted a 0.00 ERA in Perfect Game competitions. He was also a 2019 Area Code Games participant and a 2020 PBR Super 60 participant.
“Thank you Gatorade for this prestigious award!" Logan wrote in a tweet. "Also want to say thanks to all my coaches and teammates, and (Aaron Wilson). Lastly, thanks to everyone else who has helped me throughout my career!”
Wilson, the Michigan Scouting Director for the Prep Baseball Report, described Wood as “the best arm in Michigan” in Gatorade’s release.
“Logan Wood has been one of the top players in the state since his freshman year in high school,” Wilson said. “If he’d played this season, he would’ve been the first ever three-time All-State Dream Team selection in history. He won a state title as a junior, and was the top pitcher on that team. He’s easily the best arm in Michigan. Although he’s a great pitcher, the thing that stands out most about him is his character. An extremely respectful young man that has always been willing to lend a helping hand, whether that’s to a teammate or giving back to area youth.”
The award makes Wood a finalist for the Gatorade National Baseball Baseball Player of the Year award expected to be announced before the end of May.
The release also mentioned Wood maintained a 3.32 GPA and he volunteered at the Miracle League of Michigan and a local church. He has also donated his time making care packages for active-duty military and instructing youth baseball players both indoors and outdoors.
