London – Sustainable accessories brand Oliver Co. is using apples and wood to create vegan leather for its line.
Founded by Matt Oliver in 2017, Oliver Co. produces wallets, card holders and passport cases from apple leather and wood leather. According to the company’s website, the apple leather is a 50/50 mix of apple waste and polyurethane coated onto a cotton and polyester canvas. The apple waste comes from one of the world’s largest apple-producing regions in Italy.
The faux leather made of wood is created by using micro laser etching to cut thin sheets of wood that are then sewn and assembled like leather. The grain makes each product unique, and the wood, which comes from FSC-approved forests that guarantee traceability of the raw material, produces a long-lasting fabric.
Both products are lined with GOTs-certified Fair Trade cottons, Tencel and recycled polyester.
Oliver is a member of The Sustainable Angle, a nonprofit organization that helps small businesses connect with sustainable and low environmental impact fabric suppliers.
On his website, Oliver said: “There is often a belief that there is compromise when it comes to sustainable design and an expectation to give up premium aesthetics or functionality. It is our aim to change people’s perceptions and, through using innovative new sustainable fabrics and working with high-end manufacturers, we want to create minimalistic, highly functional products for today’s world.”
