Levi’s "Icons Re/Outfitted" Furniture Exhibition - HYPEBEAST

Everyone knows Levi’s as a longtime expert in denim, but it was never expected that the clothing brand would dip into furniture. The latest from Levi’s sees the American company team up with The Visionary Lab and Vitra for a furniture exhibition entitled Icons Re/Outfitted.

The new collaborative endeavor sees The Visionary Lab enlist the help of fashion designers and artists to reimagine used chairs from the Swiss family-owned furniture company. Specifically, the project casts Vitra chairs in repurposed Levi’s denim – coming to life in several eye-catching constructions. By working together, the crafty chairs further Levi’s emphasis on getting the best use out of denim alongside The Visionary Lab’s mission to shift waste practices by crafting new items.

“We’re thrilled to be a part of Icons Re/Outfitted, which not only champions innovation and craftsmanship, but also demonstrates how the lifespan of our textiles can be prolonged through innovative methods of design,” said Anit Van Eynde, VP of North Europe Marketing & BX, at Levi Strauss & Co. “This year marks the 150th anniversary of the Levi’s® 501® jean and, as we celebrate the incredible history of this iconic product, these one-of-a-kind, artful chairs invite us to consider the creative potential of reimagined denim.”

The chair exhibition is currently on display at Dutch Design Week, which runs through October 29.

In other news, London’s Design Museum examines the history of the skateboard.

Attributing the Furniture Designs That Appear as Star Trek Props - Core77.com

What do all of these chairs have in common:

They're all commercially available, and were all used as props in various Star Trek properties. It makes sense as the production designers have their hands full designing the interiors, and it's far faster to send staff to scoop up some designey mass-manufactured furniture.

Trek fans Tadeo D'Oria, Eno Farley, Bernd Schneider and Jörg Hillebrand have identified 163 chairs total and attributed them on the Ex Astris Scientia fan site.

Bubble Chair, designed by Christian Daninos for Laroche in 1968. Appears in "Star Trek: Enterprise," episode "The Aenar."

hm85 Solo, designed by Simon Pengelly for Hitch Mylius. Appears in "Star Trek Into Darkness."

President Lounge Chair 265, designed by Steen Ostergaard for Cado in 1968. Appears in "Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan."

Stokke Globe Garden, designed by Peter Opsvik. Appears in multiple episodes of "Star Trek: The Next Generation."

If you're looking to browse unconventional furniture, do give the Ex Astris Scientia site a look.
