On a Road Trip for Danish Modern Furniture - The New York Times

sedar.indah.link

The credenza in the back of the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter van groaned as Lars Balderskilde drove through the woodlands near Vejle, a city on a fjord about two and a half hours from Copenhagen.

It was late January, and after passing a lake filled with swans, Mr. Balderskilde stopped at a house where he picked up an old bar cabinet that he paid for in cash. Then came stops at other homes to collect nesting tables and a mirror. The sun had set by the time he met Nina Toft and Grethe Kock, two sisters, at the home of their mother, whose funeral they had hosted earlier that day.

“It’s always emotional, but you have to let go,” Ms. Toft said to Mr. Balderskilde, who had come to look at various pieces in the house.

Ms. Kock showed him a tiny clay bird that she had made as a girl. “I’ll give you a good deal,” she said, jokingly.

Mr. Balderskilde did not take the bird. But he did fill the van with a teak dresser and bookcase the sisters’ parents had owned since the 1950s, a desk, a blue PH 5 pendant lamp and a Le Klint 325 floor lamp, a model originally designed to decorate a residence of the Nobel Prize-winning physicist Niels Bohr. He paid the sisters $1,800 for the items.

Ms. Toft and Ms. Kock had contacted Mr. Balderskilde through a website where he offers to buy furniture from people all over Denmark. While lugging the pieces out of the house, Mr. Balderskilde told Ms. Toft, “I have a boutique in New York.”

The store, Lanoba, is actually in Jersey City, N.J., and sells refurbished Danish modern furniture, a minimalist style originating in Denmark that was typically made with natural materials like wood, leather and Danish cord from the 1930s through the 1960s.

Mr. Balderskilde, 47, who is Danish, and his husband, David Singh, 48, started the business in late 2015. Mr. Balderskilde said that he and his husband, who liked going to estate sales, had noticed a growing demand for midcentury modern furniture, particularly in the wake of “Mad Men,” the highly stylized TV show set mostly in the 1960s, whose final season was broadcast in the spring of 2015.

Danish modern design was influenced by the work of Kaare Klint, an architect, furniture designer and academic known for measuring “paper, books, tableware and humans to find the optimal proportions for furniture,” said Christian Holmsted Olesen, the head of exhibitions and collections at the Design Museum Danmark in Copenhagen. (Mr. Klint’s brother, Tage Klint, founded the brand Le Klint in 1943.)

By the 1960s, the furniture had become associated with the broader midcentury modern style popularized by American designers like Charles and Ray Eames, who often mixed wood and leather with materials like metal and plastic. Among the most notable Danish modern pieces of that decade were a pair of teak and leather chairs by Hans Wegner, which were used in a televised 1960 presidential debate between John F. Kennedy and Richard Nixon.

The chairs, Mr. Balderskilde said jokingly, “almost took focus away from the debate.”

In the 1970s, as decorating tastes shifted toward what he described as “plastic fantastic,” Danish modern furniture became less desirable. In Denmark, some pieces were tossed to the curb, according to Mr. Balderskilde, who said that a lot of furniture produced in the style’s heyday no longer exists.

“Nobody — nobody — wanted this stuff,” Mr. Balderskilde added.

Mr. Balderskilde goes to Denmark three to four times a year to buy as many as 500 items. Sidsel Alling for The New York Times

By the time Mr. Balderskilde and Mr. Singh had started Lanoba, demand had risen for furniture by leading Danish modern designers like Mr. Wegner, Finn Juhl and Grethe Jalk. (Mr. Balderskilde said that few retailers in the United States were offering pieces by “middle market” designers like Johannes Andersen and Omann Jun.) He saw potential in a business that brought unwanted pieces from Danish homes to American buyers, even if he had to travel around Denmark to buy items from individual sellers.

Amassing an inventory, he said, at first required the type of canvassing done by fledgling political campaigns. “I chatted up a lot of people in the grocery,” Mr. Balderskilde said. “I knocked on so many doors.”

Lanoba’s first sale was a footstool to a psychologist in Manhattan, which Mr. Balderskilde delivered to the buyer’s office. The business has since imported thousands of pieces, he said; most of the buyers live in Manhattan, Brooklyn and Queens.

Mr. Balderskilde now has a network of people in Denmark who know what he is looking for and who help spread the word, and he also finds pieces on platforms like Facebook Marketplace and DBA, a Danish secondhand exchange. He takes three or four sourcing trips a year (Mr. Singh stays behind to run the store), on which he tries to collect as many as 500 items.

Before the pieces are sent from Denmark to New York in shipping containers, they are stored in a barn owned by Mr. Balderskilde’s older brother, a cabinetmaker who taught him how to restore furniture.

Mr. Balderskilde bought a bar cabinet (left) and Le Klint floor lamp (right) on a sourcing trip this past winter. Before furniture is shipped to the United States, it is kept at a barn owned by his brother (center).Sidsel Alling for The New York Times

The markup on items sold at Lanoba varies — some pieces cost hundreds of dollars, others thousands — and is determined in part by the shipping costs to the United States, Mr. Balderskilde said. Sellers in Denmark, he said, generally know the provenance of the furniture he buys from them.

“It’s not like ‘American Pickers,’” Mr. Balderskilde said, referring to the reality show about antiques sellers buying unwanted items from people who are often unaware of the items’ potential value. “People know what they have.”

When many offices closed during the pandemic, Mr. Balderskilde said, Lanoba was flooded with requests for desks. He could not travel to Denmark at the time, so he asked friends and family there to find pieces for him. At one point, the store received a shipment of about 250 desks. “They sold out in five weeks,” Mr. Balderskilde said.

A lot of buyers appreciate that the furniture comes from “real Danish homes,” he said, and many sellers in Denmark like what he called the “saga” of Grandma’s furniture making its way to a brownstone in Brooklyn.

The day after Mr. Balderskilde had bought pieces from the sisters, he drove to a house in Brylle, a village on the Danish island of Funen, passing a wooden windmill, a metal windmill and an abandoned mink farm along the way.

The home, which had a for-sale sign on its lawn, belonged to the parents of Lars Egedal. Mr. Egedal was meeting Mr. Balderskilde to show him a desk that Mr. Egedal’s parents had received as a wedding gift from his grandparents in the 1960s.

Mr. Egedal said that his grandmother wasn’t happy when his parents used the desk, which had a built-in bookshelf, to decorate his brother’s childhood bedroom. “But I think she would have approved of it going to New York,” he said.

How to Arrange Furniture in Architectural Spaces? 7 Essential Tips - ArchDaily

sedar.indah.link

How to Arrange Furniture in Architectural Spaces? 7 Essential Tips

© Valeria Montjoy (ArchDaily)

As true spatial orchestrators, architects’ expertise extends beyond the mere construction of buildings, often transcending the physical realm of design. They possess the unique ability to craft spaces that are not only visually appealing, but that also feel welcoming, harmonious, and, above all, functional. Embracing this vital role involves careful consideration of all the bits and pieces that make up a project; from a building’s foundations to a sofa, architects must ensure that all the elements, in every scale, tie together in a way that is cohesive and positively influences our everyday lives.

Furniture is a key part of the equation. A holistic approach to design cannot exclude it, and understanding it as an integral part of the architectural process will inevitably elevate any spatial experience. Just as furniture must complement the room it occupies, the room itself must be designed to ensure a seamless synchronization with the furniture. Architects can plan this well in advance; for instance, they may decide early on to deliberately place a window in front of where a sofa will likely sit, or may design a large, open space envisioning in it movable partitions or modular pieces for ultimate flexibility. Even the strategic placement of wall outlets is significant, as it will directly impact how furniture is then laid out.

Whether architects and homeowners are looking to rearrange furniture for a quick refresh or start from scratch in a new build, it’s always useful to consider a few tips and tricks. Here, through a series of conceptual diagrams, we will explore some key points and design principles to take into account when arranging furniture, all united by one common goal: to optimize spaces to their fullest potential.

Always be mindful of proportions

Prior to making any design decisions, observing and measuring the space you are working with should always be the first step. Having a scaled floor plan and knowing a room’s shape, width and length is crucial to select appropriately sized pieces, position them accordingly and maintain a balance between furniture dimensions, room size and any architectural elements. This aligns with the principles advocated by Ernst Neufert, a renowned German architect and author of the influential book "Architects' Data", who emphasized the importance of understanding spatial dimensions and proportions to create functional designs. A square, 3x3 meters bedroom, for example, can fit a double bed in the middle and still leave free room to the sides. Meanwhile, a smaller rectangular room will benefit from a single bed placed along the largest wall (and with a dresser placed directly across).

Create conversation areas

After a couple of years of pandemic-related isolation, today we crave face-to-face interaction more than ever. With that in mind, well-designed furniture layouts can create a conducive environment for conversation by promoting proximity, comfort and a sense of togetherness. Because of the limits of human hearing and issues related to social interactions, furniture should generally be placed within a distance of 2.15 to 3 meters. And in large living rooms, pieces can be laid out to create separate “islands” –for example, by placing two sofas in the center and a group of chairs and side tables at one end of the room to create a separate conversation cluster.

© Valeria Montjoy (ArchDaily)

Leave space for circulation and traffic

No room is functional without providing the necessary space to move around freely and comfortably. If we take the standard living room, it’s often recommended to leave a minimum of 90 cm for frequently used passageways and 30-45 cm between seats and coffee tables. Similar principles apply to dining rooms –a minimum of 90 cm between each edge of the table and the nearest wall is a common standard (however, if traffic doesn’t pass behind the chairs on one side of the table, 60 cm should suffice). Regardless of each specific case, it’s vital to map your traffic routes and remember that, more often than not, less is indeed more.

Define a focal point if necessary

Rooms tend to be designed around one object, whether it be a window, a fireplace, an artwork or a TV. Once this focal point is identified, furniture can be oriented accordingly. This might mean arranging furniture to take advantage of beautiful views from a fixed window, keeping the view of a fireplace clear or positioning every element in a way that natural light exposure is optimized. In any case, the largest pieces of furniture –such as the sofa in the living room or the bed in the bedroom– should face the focal point. If the TV is the room’s protagonist, the minimum viewing distance between the set and the seating should be twice the screen size (measured diagonally), while the maximum viewing distance should be three times the screen size.

© Valeria Montjoy (ArchDaily)

Consider flexibility and adaptability

As the demand for adaptable, hybrid and multifunctional spaces grows, architects must consider furniture arrangement in relation to flexibility. Modular furniture is an ideal choice, as it can be easily rearranged or reconfigured in shape and size to accommodate changing needs. Movable partitions and pocket doors can also be useful to create different ambiances within one single room, hence bringing versatility to an otherwise rigid space.

Aim for visual balance and variety

“Balance is key,” goes the old saying. Furniture arrangement is no exception. For a uniform, balanced layout, it’s advisable to vary shapes, sizes and textures. An area rug is great for anchoring different pieces of furniture and adding extra texture –as a rule of thumb, it should be centered around a seating arrangement with the front legs of large furniture pieces sitting on top of it. There are many ways to play with contrast, whether it be by combining straight lines with curves or pairing solids with voids. Some successful combinations include: juxtaposing orthogonal furniture with a round table, pairing a leggy chair with a solid side table, and so on.

© Valeria Montjoy (ArchDaily)

Don’t forget about personal taste

Following all of these general guidelines can certainly be useful when arranging furniture. But at the end of the day, it’s important to bear in mind that it all boils down to the room’s function and, naturally, personal taste, style and preference. That is the last –yet arguably the most important– rule: whether you are an architect, designer or homeowner, make a point to address the needs and individual flair of those who will inhabit the space, even if that entails experimenting, challenging conventional standards and thinking outside the box.

Police: Accountant embezzled $526K from high-end Miami furniture store - WPLG Local 10

sedar.indah.link

MIAMI – An accountant working for a luxury furniture store on Miami’s Biscayne Boulevard embezzled more than a half-million dollars from the business, leading to her arrest Tuesday, according to police.

Police said Anette M. Martinez, 59, of southwest Miami-Dade, was hired as an accountant at Morada Haute Furniture in January 2021. The international furniture company was located at 3701 Biscayne Blvd. at the time and is now located at 2480 Biscayne Blvd. in Miami’s Edgewater neighborhood.

According to an arrest report, a $526,800 series of wire transfers to banks in Indonesia and Poland in May and early June of 2021 caught the attention of the company’s owner — because the company’s only international suppliers are based in Italy.

Police said Martinez told the owner that she “received the invoices and simply paid them” although the owner told police he has previously told her that he needed to approve all transactions.

They said the third-party payment processer attempted to contact Morada Haute Furniture’s owner in order to verify the transactions, but Martinez told the company were accurate and to proceed with the payments.

Martinez denied any wrongdoing in an interview with Miami police detectives, the arrest report states. She faced three grand theft charges and was released from the Turner Guilford Knight Correctional Center on a $10,000 bond.

Collaborative Kinship exhibition showcases oak-and-terrazzo furniture - Dezeen

sedar.indah.link

Designer Birgitte Due Madsen, architect Anne Dorthe Vester and curator Henriette Noermark have launched an exhibition of marble, resin and wood furniture designed to explore collaboration.

Kinship, which opened at the Alice Folker gallery in Copenhagen during the 3 Days of Design festival, showcases 18 designs that utilise terrazzo, wood, metal, resin, marble and glass.

The exhibition was informed by existing works by Madsen and Vester, including the Lucid resin chair by Madsen and the Vitrine ash-and-steel wall hanging artworks by Vester, which are also on display in the space.

Kinship showcased 18 furniture and design objects

"As a group of three individuals who thrive in collaborative environments, it was natural for us to come together for this collaboration," the collective told Dezeen.

"We wanted to explore collaboration while focusing on our individual strengths, existing work, and experiences. Each of us brings different skill sets, backgrounds and practices, which we wanted to showcase in this exhibition," the trio added.

"The exhibition delves into the exploration of collaboration by placing a spotlight on the individuals involved."

Three terrazzo chairs were made in collaboration by Madsen, Vester and Noermark

In the spirit of collaboration, the exhibitors designed three terrazzo and oak chairs together especially for the Kinship exhibition.

These were made using wood supplied by Danish flooring company Dinesen.

Located in the centre of the gallery's second room, the terrazzo bases of the chairs mimic each other in shape, with the wooden slats placed on different angles of the base.

The terrazzo used was made from glass waste, recycled bricks and concrete to reduce the CO2 emissions generated when creating the material, the gallery said.

"The design process for the terrazzo chairs stemmed from the idea of experimenting with direct collaboration. We used Birgitte and Anne Dorthe's previous works as a foundation to create a new collective collection," the trio explained.

"The chairs were designed with a consistent aesthetic and visual language that is reflected in our shared terrazzo furniture," it added.

"The intertwining of practices creates a cohesive display that showcases direct references to the slats found in Anne Dorthe's pieces and the semicircular strokes seen in Birgitte's works."

Surrounding the chairs, Madsen's series of circular Neon Cast lights are displayed on her Breton marble cubes. The gypsum and glass lights come in shades of green, blue, pink, red and purple.

Two additional neon lights hang on the walls of the gallery, each designed with a horizontal or vertical stripe of neon running through the similarly designed circular light.

The four Breton cubes, named after sailors' shirts originally designed to be functional, explore both form and function. The cubes feature uniform horizontal, vertical or diagonal stripes of marble, each with its own veiny pattern in green, pink and brown.

Also at this year's 3 Days of Design, Christian + Jade partnered with Dinesen to present the Weight of Wood exhibition and Tableau showed sculptural wooden furniture by Vaarnii.
