MICHIGAN CENTER, MI – It started as a simple hobby for Cal McFate and his family.
McFate grew up working with wood and building furniture with his dad. Then, around five years ago, he started to make furniture for his buddies who were looking for gifts for their wives.
“From there it just kind of snowballed, you might say,” McFate said.
McFate and his family decided to turn his hobby into a business. They started traveling to vintage or flea markets across the state, but after carrying stuff around for years, they decided to open a more permanent store.
The store, Modern Farmhouse, officially opened its doors in March in Michigan Center. The locally-owned family business prides itself in making high-quality furniture at a fair price, McFate said.
“I try to keep the prices reasonable, hoping that I can have something affordable for everyone to buy,” he said. “The average is probably $140 for an end table, up to $1,100 for an eight-foot table.”
The 2,000 square foot showroom features furniture and home décor.
“We have more larger pieces that we couldn’t take to shows before,” McFate said
Customers will find a range of furniture mainly in the style of “modern farmhouse,” hence the name of the business. This includes tables, benches, TV stands and more.
The store has been popular in the community since its opening McFate said, adding that the staff loves working with customers to figure out what they want.
“We’ve been getting a lot of positive feedback, and everyone has been telling their friends,” McFate said.
The store keeps standard and popular items in the store, but takes personalized orders. If people want more traditional furniture, something larger or even in hot pink, they can make it, McFate said. The store also offers delivery, he said.
“I just like to make a quality product and see the expression on their face when they see it for the first time,” he said.
Modern Farmhouse, 4552 Page Ave., is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday through Saturday and noon to 4 p.m. Sunday. The store is closed Monday through Wednesday. Orders can be made at 517-740-6687 or on the store’s Facebook page.

So, I really appreciated being able to step back and have a professional do the work. The specific delivery window gave us plenty of time to get rid of our old couch without running the risk of finding ourselves without a sofa suddenly!
What was the assembly process like? How long did it take and how many people?
The entire assembly was completed by two delivery drivers and took 20 minutes. They were prompt and efficient, wore masks, respected social distancing, and were incredibly courteous. They brought the couch in, assembled it, and took all the boxes, wrapping, and foam away with them.

What are the dimensions? How does it fit in your space? Would it be better suited for a different type of home?
The Logan sectional is 108 inches wide, 68 inches deep, and 33 inches high overall, while the sofa portion is 73 inches wide, 36 inches deep, and 33 inches high. The chaise section measures 35 inches wide, 68 inches deep, and 33 inches high. It is both taller and deeper than a typical couch, so definitely not for those living in cramped quarters, but it fits nicely in my more open-concept house in Maine.
Sit test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?
The couch is comfortable, if a bit firm, and feels very well made. I especially like the fabric, which has a durable feel without being scratchy. It feels soft enough to curl up on, but definitely has some structure to it. This is not a quicksand couch and, personally, my spine thanks me for that! The seat is quite deep, however—I’m 5’1” and my feet don’t touch the ground when I’m sitting all the way back, which, while I don’t mind so much when it’s just me, is a little awkward when you’re entertaining guests.
Lay test: Is it comfortable? Does it feel well made? Does the couch have a tendency to sag?
This couch takes up more space than I anticipated and is better suited to larger living rooms/homes. The chaise, especially, would make it a hard fit for a small apartment, but it has a clean contemporary look that makes it adaptable for any decor style, and it’s understated enough to blend in, without feeling like a piece of office furniture.
Is the sectional suitable for particular decor styles and, if so, which?
The Logan sectional is well made and very sturdy. The legs were equipped with well-fitting felt pads, which, having a pine floor, was an important factor. For our home, which has a somewhat open floor plan, this couch is very practical, and the chaise detaches easily from the body of the sectional, so maneuvering the couch around isn’t a hassle when you want to rearrange. Also, the polyblend fabric is easy to spot-clean, which means that I don’t have to worry about small messes, which are inevitable in our house.

“We are in desperate need of the very basics – mattresses, dressers, sofas, dining sets – and are encouraging anyone living in Oakland, Wayne or Macomb to donate immediately. The families who come to us can’t afford to purchase these items at retail or resale and still afford food, rent and utilities,” said Robert Boyle, executive director.
Currently, more than 150 families who are either in poverty, transitioning from homelessness or working with child protective services are in need of furniture to build new lives.
There are several ways that members of the community can help with this urgent need:
• Visit the website and make a monetary donation to help cover the cost of other items such as comforter sets for children and other items.
• Donate your gently-used items to the Furniture Bank by calling 248-332-1300 or visit furniture-bank.org/donate/donate-furniture/ to coordinate a free pick up of the items being donated. The Furniture Bank makes donating furniture easy and will take items from the porch or garage at no charge. In other cases, for only $50, trained movers will carefully remove items like mattresses, box springs, dressers, dining sets and basic living room furniture in the home. The Furniture Bank will also remove items such as china cabinets, desks and armoires for a modest charge.
Raising awareness of the need and how everyone can chip in to help families in need is also important.
Boyle said with the end of the eviction moratorium, summer floods and so many families being resettled, they’re seeing remarkably high numbers.
“This is even more concerning because our referral volumes always increase in the spring, so we’re anticipating an even greater spike in coming weeks,” Boyle said.
The Furniture Bank has been helping to furnish homes in southeastern Michigan for more than 50 years, providing more than 85,000 vulnerable families with beds and essential items required to live with stability and dignity.

ARLINGTON, Texas — Family-owned retailer Canales Furniture is making big plans as it approaches two decades in business.
While it already has 17 stores in the Dallas-Fort Worth metro, the brand, founded by Veronica Canales in 2003, is close to opening a new, 215,000-square-foot facility that will serve as a showroom, corporate headquarters and distribution center. Company officials expect the full facility to be open in June.
Marketing Director Mylene Mitchell told Furniture Today that the showroom will occupy around 20,000 square feet with the distribution center using 165,000 square feet. The rest will be used as headquarters. She noted that the company plans on beautifying the surrounding area and making it into a destination in the Arlington area.
When the showroom is open, it will feature a new shopping concept for the brand.
“All of our Canales Furniture stores are set up our lifestyles for every home aesthetic. At our new store, we’re going to do the same setup but it will be in apartment set-ups so the customer can envision their home when they walk in,” said Mitchell. “Right now it’s all living room, all bedroom, but it will soon be a full home set up.”
Mitchell said as part of opening the new showroom and warehouse, Canales will continue its longstanding Family-to-Family plan, which rewards customers who bring in new business based on a recommendation.
“When it comes to community, we want to make sure we give back to the same communities that helped us grow. Our founder, my godmother, started selling door-to-door,” she said. “The Hispanic community, if they like something, they will recommend it so that’s always been good to us.”

WASHINGTON — Furniture and home furnishings retail was slightly ahead of the national average in March according to the Department of Commerce’s advance monthly estimates of retail sales.
For the month, furniture and home furnishings stores posted sales figures of $12.861 billion, up 0.7% from February’s $12.776 billion. The month’s figures were up 3.6% compared with March 2021’s $12.414 billion.
In the three months encompassing January through March, furniture and home furnishings retail sales were up 4.3% from October through December 2021 and up 5.8% compared with January to March 2021.
The overall retail picture showed modest growth, as the entire sector’s sales reached $665.726 billion, up 0.5% from February’s $662.417 billion. Growth is up 6.9% vs. the $622.897 billion recorded a year ago.
While furniture and home furnishings’ growth was largely in line with the national figure, several categories outperformed the rate. Gas stations (8.9%) led the way, likely fueled by surging prices at the pump. General merchandise (5.4%), sporting goods, hobby, musical instrument and book stores and electronics stores (both 3.3%), and clothing and clothing accessories stores (2.6%) were among the big gainers.
Non-store retailers (down 6.4%) and motor vehicle and parts dealers (down 1.9%) were among categories that showed significant dips in sales.
The DOC’s advance estimates are based on a sub-sample of the U.S. Census Bureau’s full retail and food services sample. Furniture should represent who you are. That’s what Chaya Krinsky, CEO of TOV Furniture, believes and why the brand decided to spotlight six accomplished Black interior designers with The Voice Collection. “We had the opportunity to be a part of a major moment in industry history and provide a stage for these six designers to showcase their exceptional talent,” says Krinsky. “While we feel that a collection of this size has come far too late, we are thrilled to be able to bring it to life.” Meet the designers and some of our favorite pieces.

There’s Memphis-based Carmeon Hamilton, winner of HGTV’s Design Star: Next Gen, who created a chest, a coffee table and a side table, and a credenza. “The Voice Collection has provided a platform for designers who are typically never heard,” she says. “I hope that with this collection, the industry not only hears us but starts to implement change on our behalf.”
Don Ricardo Massenburg describes his design esthetic as bold, modern, and lush, and so are the artful and curvaceous chairs and bed he crafted. He says: “The plump, rounded edges of each piece wrap around you like a cozy hug.” Based in North Carolina, he owns the interior design company Design Inkredible, helping each client make their home into the ultimate destination.

When you see the leopard print in Nicole White’s pieces, it’ll make perfect sense that she is a fan of glam. “I hope the collection serves as a reminder to embrace who you are and not try to fit in anyone’s mold of what they think you should be,” says White, who paid homage to her family with each piece. White, a self-taught designer, says it’s always been her dream to have her own furniture collection, and this one speaks to her distinctive boldness.
“A room is nothing but a fantastic conversation with several different viewpoints, but each one matters,” says Atlanta-based Justin Q. Williams. His chair, sectional, and console, named after and his standard poodle, will bring a significant dose of elegance to any space. “I want to be remembered as the designer who made great design approachable,” says Williams. “The world of design has been stuffy for far too long. I say it’s time to make it a bit more diverse and accessible.”
Erika Ward is all about blending timeless style and modern living. The Ava Bed and Brooke Dresser “have distinctive elements that make them both classic and current,” says Ward, who has also worked with companies like Home Depot and aims to spread polish without pretentiousness.
Nile Johnson’s work has been featured on television and in numerous publications, but this collection is personal. It’s a love letter to his three children, who were adopted out of foster care. “Nothing was permanent for them except uncertainty,” explains Johnson, who is based in Philadelphia. “So each piece, a stylish staple for any home, represents the permanency of our union.” Case in point: The sofa symbolizes outstretched arms waiting for an embrace.
The Voice Collection from TOV has over 20 pieces (starting at $299) to bring personality and panache to any home, no matter what its design style. “At TOV, we operate with one rule: Don’t be boring,” says Krinsky. “And Carmeon, Don, Nile, Nicole, Erika, and Justin are anything but that.”
