This week has been among the stranger golf weeks in the last few years. Tiger Woods was badly injured in a career-threatening car crash on Tuesday, and has undergone multiple procedures in the days that have followed as athletes from all over the world offered up their well wishes.

On Sunday at the Cologuard Classic, a PGA Tour Champions event, Phil Mickelson paid tribute to his longtime rival and recent pal by going full red and black with his scripting -- a nod to Tiger's Sunday threads. Loads of players playing the WGC-Workday Championship on the PGA Tour also paid tribute to the guy who has changed their sport.

Rory McIlroy, Cameron Champ, Patrick Reed, Tony Finau, Jason Day, Justin Thomas and several other golfers playing in the first WGC event of 2021 at The Concession wore some form of a red top and black pants to let know Tiger they were thinking about him. 

Finau even went full "Tiger at the 2018 PGA Championship" look with the backwards hat.

One of the fascinating parts of Tiger's career is this late-stage turn with him playing the role of mentor and friend to so many of the best players in the world who are in their 20s or 30s. Thomas was near tears on Tuesday when being asked about Woods' accident, and everyone throughout the week has been poignant in their effusive praise for the best to ever do it.

"He means a lot to the game of golf," said Finau early in the week. "I can only speak from my experience, he means a lot to my career. I've said it I think time after time, the 1997 Masters changed the course of my life, course of my career. Without that event, I probably wouldn't be here, I wouldn't be playing golf. So he definitely changed the course of my life, my career. 

"I think I'm one of hundreds of guys out here probably that would say the same thing. He means a lot to the game, but individually, I think he means a lot to us just individually, especially for me."

Later in the day on Sunday as the plethora of tributes were making the rounds, Woods took to time to express his gratitude on Twitter. 

"It is hard to explain how touching today was when I turned on the TV and saw all the red shirts," Woods said. "To every golfer and every fan, you are truly helping me get through this tough time."

Leah Wood, point of service specialist at Outer Banks Family Medicine – Kitty Hawk, is The Outer Banks Hospital’s Employee of the Month for February 2021. She joined The Outer Banks Hospital and Medical Group team nearly two years ago.

“Patients and team members alike are touched by Wood’s capacity for caring, and she is truly the face of the office,” stated a press release from TOBH, which also stated Wood is an organizer, planner, cheerleader and motivator. “Others step up after seeing her take the lead. She works with the clinical team to ensure all patients are cared for in a timely, efficient and appropriate manner. She has the ability to appropriately triage calls, increasing the team’s efficiency.”

Wood is a go-to person for clinical staff as well as providers regarding scheduling concerns. She can be counted on to step up when asked and will frequently volunteer for additional tasks or responsibilities. Dr. Terryberry, one of four providers at the practice, stated, “A doctor is only as good as the person at the front desk. In my 31 years of practice, I know no one better.”

In addition to her daily work, Wood is taking classes with the goal of becoming a nurse and stays up to date on all patient access service (PAS) information and other system updates. “She is extremely knowledgeable and is an amazing resource and mentor for other team members,” stated the release. “She has the ability to meet an individual (patient or fellow team member) where they are at and help them grow from that point. She has been instrumental in improving numerous workflow processes related to templates, scheduling, scanning, and document management.”

Upon hearing that she had been chosen as the February Employee of the Month, Wood stated, “I wouldn’t be the employee I am today without a little help from my coworkers at Outer Banks Family Medicine – Kitty Hawk!” She continued, “It means the world to me and I appreciate the recognition more than words can describe.”

Buffett’s Berkshire Snaps Up Record $24.7 Billion of Own Stock

(Bloomberg) -- Warren Buffett’s Berkshire Hathaway Inc. bought back a record $24.7 billion of its own stock last year and said there’s more to come, as the conglomerate struggled to find other ways to deploy its enormous pile of cash.The company’s purchase of $9 billion of shares in the fourth quarter matched a record set in the previous three-month period, Buffett said Saturday in his annual letter to investors.“Berkshire has repurchased more shares since year-end, and is likely to further reduce its share count in the future,” Buffett, 90, said in the letter. “That action increased your ownership in all of Berkshire’s businesses by 5.2% without requiring you to so much as touch your wallet.”Buffett’s letter, a closely-watched missive from one of the world’s most renowned investors, devoted large portions to the impact of repurchases, one of Berkshire’s biggest capital-deployment moves last year as it “made no sizable acquisitions.” He also shared his thoughts on the strategy of conglomerates, praising businesses such as Berkshire’s insurance operations and railroad.He shied away from some of the most controversial issues of the day, including politics, the pandemic and racial equality. But Buffett stood by his optimism for America, saying that progress on achieving a “more perfect union” was uneven but still moving forward.“Our unwavering conclusion: Never bet against America,” he said.There was a small amount of progress in paring the cash pile, which fell 5% in the fourth quarter to $138.3 billion. Buffett has struggled to keep pace with the flow in recent years as Berkshire threw off cash faster than he could find higher-returning assets to snap up.Apple Inc. is one of Berkshire’s top three most-valuable assets, at $120 billion, Buffett said. The technology company has said it intends to repurchase its own shares as well.“The math of repurchases grinds away slowly, but can be powerful over time,” Buffett said. “The process offers a simple way for investors to own an ever-expanding portion of exceptional businesses.”Separately, Buffett acknowledged that the $11 billion writedown Berkshire took last year was almost entirely due to what he conceded was a “mistake” in 2016, when he paid too much for Precision Castparts. Precision is a fine company, Buffett said, but he admitted he made a big error.“I was wrong, however, in judging the average amount of future earnings and, consequently, wrong in my calculation of the proper price to pay for the business,” Buffett said in the letter.Stock PortfolioSwings in Berkshire’s massive $281.2 billion stock portfolio feed into the company’s net income because of an accounting technicality. That drove the figure up 23% to $35.8 billion in the fourth quarter from a year earlier.Berkshire’s Class A shares gained roughly 2.4% last year, falling short of the 16% increase in the S&P 500.The billionaire only briefly touched on one of the largest questions looming over Berkshire -- how long he might stay at the helm. He once again referenced a favorite CEO, Mrs. Blumkin, who founded Nebraska Furniture Mart. Every New Super Mario Furniture Item Coming to Animal Crossing - Screen Rant

In honor of the 35th Anniversary of Super Mario Brothers, and just in time for MAR10 day, players will have the opportunity to purchase Super Mario-themed furniture, costumes, and items in Animal Crossing: New Horizons when the Mario Update rolls out on February 25. Players can look forward not only to decorative items that can be placed around their homes or the public venues on their island, but also the new Warp Pipes, which will work as a method of fast travel and allow players to easily move between sections of the island.

Players will need to connect to the Internet and download the free update to access all the items. As a thank-you gift for making the update, they will receive the Super Mario Wallpaper item for free. Players will need to wait until March 1 to begin purchasing items in the Super Mario set. While Nintendo has yet to release the full list of items players can purchase during this collaboration, players have identified at least 33 listed in the Nook Shopping app in the trailer, which released during Nintendo Direct on February 17. Every Super Mario Item Coming to Animal Crossing: New Horizons

On March 1, players can visit Nook Shopping and enter the Promotions tab to access the new items. It is not currently clear if Nintendo plans to implement a limit on how many of these items players will be able to purchase each day as they have with other promotions, but it is likely players will need to pace their purchases regardless to avoid running out of bells.

Though most of the furniture is decorative, players can purchase two Pipes that will work as fast travel portals around their island. In addition, players can touch some of the furniture items to see an animated effect akin to what the item does in the original Super Mario Bros games. For example, the Thwomp will smash to the ground, and the Super Star will flash and spin.

Players will also be able to purchase outfits for their character based on Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Wario. Each costume comes in separate pieces. These are:

I was really looking forward to this Glenn Adamson, Evan Snyderman, and Abby Bangser-curated show, which revives the Smithsonian’s 1969 exhibition Objects USA for our era. The 1969 show, a survey of contemporary studio craft and design across the country, was a defining exhibit of the post-war era that included work from George Nakashima, Anni Albers, and Wendell Castle — to name a few — and also helped to launch the careers of JB Blunk and Michelle Oka Doner.

This show includes many of their works, but also significantly expands the roster with many contemporary artists and many artists of color. I loved Joyce Lin’s “Skinned Table” — a found object whose veneers have been peeled back, painted gold, and re-attached an inch or so from the surface, like an exploded diagram. Meanwhile, I could stare for hours at Katie Stout’s “Fruit Lady Floor Lamp” (which is exactly, as the name suggests, a woman’s figure composed of ceramic fruit) and never get bored. And don’t miss the miniscule weed pots of Doyle Lane, a potter who was included in the original exhibition. The accompanying catalog, published by Monacelli Press, is one I’ll be keeping on my bookshelf. Closing July 2021.

I’m always excited about the art shows that the design studio Egg Collective — founded by three women who have backgrounds in architecture, sculpture, and fine woodworking — curates in its showroom in Tribeca. The current show, organized by Tealia Ellis Ritter, is called “Support Systems,” which is meant to be a “play on words for the specific need of support that both artists and society have felt so deeply during the pandemic.” It includes the meticulous porcelain chainmail that Taylor Kibby turns into sculptures, ranging from slouchy ceramics that look as hard as metal to pieces that look as soft as textile weavings. Closes April 16.

Walking inside Kristen Wentrcek and Andrew Zebulon’s show, I felt as if I had wandered into a mad scientist’s lab, which isn’t too far off from how the two work: They apply a material used in one context to another and push it to its limit, encasing found industrial materials in urethane or stuffing them with fur. They sourced materials for the show from orthodontics and medical suppliers, gardening stores, eBay, and hardware stores. “We feel like a material or a texture or a scent can trigger reactions without you necessarily even knowing where they come from or why,” Wentrcek and Zebulon explain.

Over the years, Wentrcek and Zebulon have moved between the worlds of furniture design, functional artwork, and art. So it’s exciting to see them work in the context of an immersive show that contains all of those perspectives. Closing May 11.

It’s wild to see how Brian Donnelly (aka KAWS) went from tagging bus shelter ads on the sly to making 130-foot inflatable sculptures that tourists line up to see, through a 25-year arc laid out in a single show. There’s a sense that the point of it all is really the gift shop — which is brimming with every kind of merchandise, from limited-edition toys and apparel to collectible plates, books, and more, and is placed in a soaring gallery. But also that the art establishment is finally taking him seriously, not just as an art market sensation. Of all the things in the survey, I enjoyed looking inside KAWS’s early sketchbooks the most. I could see the evolution of his experiments with lettering, some of his early graffiti work that only exists in his personal photographs, and how he came up with his tag — all before he became famous. Closing September 5.

This crowdsourced “virtual archive built by everyone, about everyone, for everyone” has been one of my favorite recent Instagram follows. This month it’s been sharing the work of Black designers like Reynold Ruffins, a partner at Push Pin (he illustrated a very heartwarming 1976 cover for Sesame Street magazine featuring Roosevelt Franklin drawing “I Love You” Valentine’s); Pedro Bell, a designer who worked on album covers for Funkadelic; and Lisa Lyons, Dorothy Zellner, and Ruth Howard, the designers of the Black Panther Party’s logo.

More than a year after the death of Kobe Bryant, his wife is taking issue with tweets posted immediately after his helicopter crash calling attention to his past rape accusation.

Vanessa Bryant posted two tweets onto her Instagram story from actress Evan Rachel Wood and documentary producer Abigail Disney. Both tweets, which received blowback from Bryant's fans the day they were posted, bluntly called the Los Angeles Lakers legend a "rapist."

In her story, Bryant wrote that Wood's tweet had just come to her attention, then launched an attack on both women claiming they had slandered her husband, exemplified structural racism in the criminal justice system and did not know the facts of the case.

Your false, insensitive, defamatory and slanderous tweet on 1/26/20 is vile and disturbing to say the least. Behavior like this is part of the reason why innocent black men go to jail for crimes they didn't commit. An accusation doesn't make someone guilty. YOU DON'T KNOW THE FACTS OF THE CASE.

Bryant wrote the same thing regarding Disney's post, but with the later Jan. 29 date.

Bryant followed those posts with screengrabs of several angry replies to the tweets in question. While Wood deactivated her Twitter account back in June, Disney's is still up and has been hit with a tidal wave of angry messages in her replies.

The posts criticizing Wood and Disney came the same day Bryant called for the names of the deputies who leaked photos from her husband and daughter's crash site to be released, which she also addressed in her Instagram story.

The facts of the Kobe Bryant rape case

The Bryant case has been eternally litigated and re-litigated, but the basics bear out to this: Bryant, then married, invited a 19-year-old employee of a Colorado resort to his room, where they had sex. Bryant told police the encounter was consensual after previously denying it had taken place, while the woman claimed it was violent and not consensual. The woman had bruises around her neck, which Bryant tried to explain to police by saying strangling during sex was his "thing." The accuser's blood was also found on Bryant's T-shirt.

Bryant was arrested and charged with sexual assault, but the charges were dismissed more than a year later when Bryant's accuser refused to testify. Over that span, her identity had been leaked multiple times, she had received death threats and Bryant's legal team had aggressively probed her mental health and sexual history, including an encounter around the time of Bryant's alleged assault.

The day the charges were dropped, Bryant released a public apology which included these two sentences:

"Although I truly believe this encounter between us was consensual, I recognize now that she did not and does not view this incident the same way I did. After months of reviewing discovery, listening to her attorney, and even her testimony in person, I now understand how she feels that she did not consent to this encounter."

A civil case filed by the accuser eventually led to a settlement including a confidentiality agreement and a payment of an undisclosed amount. Obviously, discussion of the case didn't end there, and has remained a dark chapter in a story beloved by a legion of basketball fans and made even more contentious after Bryant's death.

During the beginning of his MLB career with the Chicago Cubs, Kerry Wood was one of the most feared pitchers in baseball. Had injuries not ruined his body, Wood may have gone down as one of the best pitchers in MLB history.

Before the 2007 season, Kerry Wood proved once and for all that he was cursed. Not only did he get hurt before the regular season started, but Wood injured himself in a very bizarre way.

The Cubs drafted Kerry Wood in the 1995 MLB June amateur draft. The righty made his MLB debut during the 1998 season and was a monster right away.

Not only did Wood win the 1998 Rookie of the Year Award, but he struck out 20 Houston Astros batters on May 6, 1998. The Cubs won by a final score of 2-0, with Wood pitching all nine innings without allowing a run. He only allowed one hit and walked zero batters.

Wood started 26 games as a rookie and finished with a record of 13-6. He struck out 233 batters and compiled an ERA of 3.40. The future looked extremely bright for the Texas native.

Unfortunately, Kerry Wood’s injury woes began during spring training in 1999.

During spring training in 1999, Kerry Wood tore his ulnar collateral ligament (UCL). He underwent successful Tommy John surgery to repair the UCL’s damage in his right elbow and missed the entire 1999 season.

From 2000 to 2006, Wood appeared in 163 games for the Cubs. He had a record of 58-50 and struck out 1,066 batters. During the 2003 season, Wood made his first All-Star team and led the MLB in strikeouts with 266.

However, the 2004 season was a different story. Wood went 8-9 and was sidelined for nearly two months with a strained triceps. He dealt with several injuries from 2004 to 2008 and underwent multiple surgeries.

The Cubs converted Kerry Wood to a reliever near the end of his tenure in Chicago since his arm couldn’t handle being a starter anymore. While the hard-throwing righty made his second All-Star team in 2008, every Cubs fan will always remember what happened before the 2007 campaign began.

The two-time All-Star slipped getting out of a hot tub and hurt his stomach and chest

In one of the wildest injuries in sports history, Kerry Wood hurt his stomach and chest in February of 2007 after slipping at home while getting out of a hot tub. Wood and Cubs manager Lou Piniella tried to downplay the injury, but everyone in Chicago knew that Wood was cursed by the injury bug.

“It was just a little spill,” Kerry Wood said in 2007 about his hot tub accident. “I didn’t think anything of it. Nothing’s wrong. It’s just going to be a few extra days. My arm feels great. My body feels good.”

“Look, he’s going to be fine,” Piniella said. “Let’s not get carried away with this. We have all the time in the world in spring training. It’s just a little bruise, nothing more. It’s just a precaution.”

Wood pitched in 22 games for the Cubs during the 2007 season. He went 1-1 and racked up 24 strikeouts and 13 walks. Chicago made the playoffs but lost to the Arizona Diamondbacks in the NL Division Series in three games.

Kerry Wood finished his MLB career with 1,582 strikeouts in 446 games with the Cubs, Cleveland Indians, and New York Yankees. He recorded 86 wins and 63 saves.

Vanessa Bryant says that Evan Rachel Wood calling her late husband Kobe Bryant a “rapist” the day he died is “vile” and “disturbing.”

Hours after Kobe’s death on Jan. 26, 2020, the “Westworld” actress, 33, tweeted, “What has happened is tragic. I am heartbroken for Kobe’s family. He was a sports hero. He was also a rapist. And all of these truths can exist simultaneously.”

Vanessa, 38, posted on Saturday to her Instagram Story that the tweet was just coming to her attention over a year later.

“Your false, insensitive, defamatory and slanderous tweet on 1/26/20 is vile and disturbing to say the least,” the NBA player’s widow wrote over a screenshot of the original tweet. “Behavior like this is part of the reason why innocent black men go to jail for crimes they didn’t commit. An accusation doesn’t make someone guilty.”

“YOU DON’T KNOW THE FACTS OF THE CASE,” she added. Vanessa sent the same message to film producer Abigail Disney, who tweeted at the time, “The man was a rapist. Deal with it.”

Kobe was accused of sexual assault in 2003 by a 19-year-old hotel employee in Colorado. Prosecutors dropped the charges after the accuser declined to testify. She later brought a civil case against the Los Angeles Laker, which was settled out of court in 2005.

Wood’s tweet immediately sparked backlash in 2020, with fans coming to Kobe’s defense. Actress Kyla Pratt responded that she admired Wood’s work, but “this tweet? How f–king dare you?”

Vanessa posted and thanked Pratt for her response to Wood on Saturday.

A rep for Wood did not immediately return our request for comment.

Earlier this month, Wood named her alleged abuser as ex-fiancé Marilyn Manson.

“He started grooming me when I was a teenager and horrifically abused me for years,” she claimed. “I was brainwashed and manipulated into submission. I am done living in fear of retaliation, slander, or blackmail. I am here to expose this dangerous man and call out the many industries that have enabled him, before he ruins any more lives. I stand with the many victims who will no longer be silent.”

Following several allegations from Wood and other women, Manson — who has vehemently denied all accusations — was dropped by his record label and longtime manager.

“Obviously, my art and my life have long been magnets for controversy, but these recent claims about me are horrible distortions of reality,” Manson, 52, wrote in a statement. “My intimate relationships have always been consensual with like-minded partners. Regardless of how — and why — others are now choosing to misrepresent the past, that is the truth.”

BRADENTON, Fla. – Patrick Reed stayed in the mix Friday at the WGC-Workday Championship despite a few squirrely shots on his back nine.

Reed had a topped shot and two water balls in his second consecutive round of 68 that left him three shots back of Brooks Koepka heading into the weekend.

On his worm burner, Reed explained that he recently added more loft on his 3-wood so he could have more height on his approach shots into Concession’s elevated greens. But on the par-5 third hole, Reed tried to hit a low cut around the tree in front of him and came into the ball with too much shaft lean.

“It had to have just literally hit right in the ground in front and it went forward,” Reed said.

His ball trickled into a fairway bunker, but from 142 yards away he spun his short iron back to 4 feet and made birdie. As he said to caddie Kessler Karain: “We laid up to the perfect number.”

Reed mentioned something else to Golf Channel on-course reporter John Wood as he climbed out of the bunker. Said Wood on the broadcast: “He looked over at me and said with a big smile, ‘I was just trying to give Tiger something to laugh about,’” referring to Woods, who is recovering in a Los Angeles-area hospital after a serious car accident earlier this week.

Reed’s adventures continued from there.

On his tee shot on the fifth hole, Reed said his back foot slipped on his downswing, pulling his ball into the pond. He did well to make bogey after getting up-and-down from a greenside bunker.

Then on the eighth hole, Reed drove into the right-hand side of the fairway and had a tricky wedge shot over the trees and into a well-protected green. Despite choosing what he thought was plenty of club, his ball landed short of the putting surface and rolled back into the water, leading to a bogey.

“I basically just kind of (need to) reset,” Reed said afterward. “I felt like I’m still making good golf swings and putting myself in spots that you need to in order to attack this golf course. There toward the end it was just kind of a couple head scratchers.”

Tiger Woods 'in good spirits' after follow-up procedures for injuries - NBC News

LOS ANGELES — Tiger Woods is "recovering and in good spirits" after follow-up procedures for injuries sustained in a rollover car crash that left the star golfer with serious leg injuries, his representatives said Friday.

The procedures were successful, said a tweet from TGR Ventures, the organization founded by Woods, posted to the golfer's account.

"Tiger and his family want to thank you all for the wonderful support and messages they have received over the past few days," the statement said.

Woods, 45, suffered broken bones in his leg and other injuries in the Tuesday morning crash near Rancho Palos Verdes, a city in southwest Los Angeles County.

A rod was put in his leg and pins and screws were used to stabilize injuries to his foot and ankle, the chief medical officer of Harbor-UCLA Medical Center said. Woods has since been moved to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center.
